The Fog

The Grumpy Celt

So I went to see The Fog this weekend. At a matinee showing.

In my estimation, it was all right, about as good as the original. Some parts were better, like the higher body count among the villagers - those were some angry ghosts. Some parts worse, like the stupid drunken party on the boat - the killings of the fishermen in the original was better because it felt so indiscriminate, rather than the “punishing horny teenagers” staple of so many horror films.

At least – again, in my estimation – it was all right, about as good as the original, right up until the end, which was worse than having leprosy.

There are few easily used ideas for a game to steal, except (A) having a boat load of lepers show up and the PCs have to deal or (B) have a boat load of long-dead lepers show up and the PCs have to deal.

The "rot away" special attack was not used enough.

The ending fell flat. Really felt like the DM was trying not to kill PCs after they were in a hopeless situation.

I liked the beginning and I liked the middle. The ending just completely fell apart. The original was much better in that aspect as you knew exactly what they were after, unlike the ending of the remake.
