Current round match-up picks:
O'Brien vs. Nurse Ratched: Geez, tough one. This would be a worthy final. Gonna go with Ratched because she's scarier on a personal level, at least for me, but...kinda second-guessing myself, especially in the current political climate.
The Commander vs. Napoleon: More fascists (well, one communist, but functionally more or less the same). For me, it's the Commander. Napoleon is awesomely hyperbolic, but the Commander could not be more timely.
Pennywise vs. Kurtz: Pennywise. Kurtz is way more historically and culturally meaningful, but Pennywise is way more fun. It is just a good time (well, except for that scene; you know the one), while Heart of Darkness, which I've taught at least a half dozen times, remains a slog.
Sauron vs. Count Dracula: Two more heavyweights, and while my brain says Dracula is the more impactful villain, my heart is making me pick Sauron. Even though, now I think about it, he's basically Satan, but not as good (or Morgoth is Satan and Sauron is Satan Jr. ...) eh, screw it. Switching to Dracula.
Iago vs. Lady Macbeth: I'm choosing the Lady, because she is a much more nuanced and interesting character, while he's a straight-up scheming villain.
Hannibal Lecter vs. Humbert Humbert: Humbert Humbert. On this one, I'm just going with literary merit, and while Harris is no slouch, Nabokov is one of the best writers to ever do it.
Satan vs. Javert: Is either even really a villain? I guess that's the point of this category, but I don't have a tattoo of Javert, so I'm obviously picking Satan.
Gollum vs. Medea: This is the weirdest match-up of the round, and while I want to pick Medea, she had the misfortune of coming up against one of my all time favourites, so it's Gollum. My Precious.
