The Grudge sucked

I loved the Grudge. I don't know if it matters to one's take on the movie, but I did my best to put my self into watching as if I was a native, born and raised Japanese. I've done enough reading on what media (music, theater, etc.) is popular in Japan that I had an idea what to look for. *shrug* But I also enjoyed it for what was different about it than American conventions. It scared the heck out of me and movies rarely if ever can. That it could scare me, I just had to like it. :)

Liking the Grudge so much I decided to give The Ring a chance. I have never been so disappointed before. Never has a genre blockbuster do so. I dunno what it was. It might have been because the display of Japanese culture was entirely filtered out that I couldn't as easily put myself a different cultural perspective.

Anyone have opinions on how Dark Water does, as a movie and as a translation?

Yeah, the theater version of the Grudge was not great. However, there was a pretty fair amount cut from the Grudge, which did not help the coherency of the film. Remember this was an R-rated horror film that was cut down to a pg-13 rating. The uncut version is signficantly better from what I'm told. It's still not one of the greatest horror films of all time, but if you didn't like the Ring you are unlikely to enjoy any japanese horror films.

I would have to say that Japanese horror movies do tend to require a somewhat greater degree of suspention of disbelief probably mostly due to the cultural differences and the resulting differences in styles.

I found myself on the opposite side of that argument. I thought the grudge and Ju'on were both very creepy, scary films. The scariest films I've seen in years. i could care less about the plot with that movie and more about the scares. Yes its stupid as hell SPOILERS: for them to "save the house" but damned if i couldn't sleep alone that night.

I did like the japanese version slightly better though. It was better acted and not being familiar with any of the actors or actresses gave me a feeling of not knowing what was next.

The japanese version of the ring, rringu, bored me to death. I actually liked the american version better, I think the better special effects added to the tension.

The scariest movie I've seen lately was Ju'on 2. SPOILERS that movie still creeps me out. That was a scary movie. Great directing in it makes it scarier than the first. Theres this one scene where this lady moves into an apartment and she hreres a loud noise coming from the wall. Everyone once in a while they cut a scene to her hearing this noise. At the end we find out what the noise is. To write it doesn't do the justice but when you see it, its creepy as alll get out. There are two more scenes similiar to that are creeped out as well.

The plot of the movie wasn't unique, but the carrying out of it was great.

Only if you ignore the scripts. :]
I think you have to watch the show to really comment on it. It is the best written show in a while and alot of it is the underlining meanings in the episodes. You can't watch a couple of shows and make a comment on it.

I'm not a bandwagon guy but Whedon is a genius writer. He has a way of making characters more than what they are on the screen. Giving depth to what should be comic book charactures. Even now, he's working on the Astonishing X-men comic and its revived my love for comic books by presenting the characters in a different way. I was surprised. I purposley didn't watch Firefly thinking it wasn't going to be good, but after sitting through part of a marathon he proved me wrong again. I challenge you to watch season 3, the last six episodes, and come back with yuour opinion on it.

The Grudge was simply awful. The Japanese version was simply crap. I think the only reason it had success at the box office was the presence of 'Buffy'. I hated that show too.

I did like the Ring though.
Wow! What an incredibly useful commentary!

<!-- / message -->I'm confused. This is the last sentence in a paragraph concerning primarily Firefly. It was my understanding that Firefly only lasted one season? Or do you mean season 3 of Buffy?
