THE HEROES OF DYVERS CHAPTER 7: CLARE'S ERRAND

Lathir thins his lips in dour expression, which is likely the most emotion that he will display. “Not a natural creature.” He moves into the room to his left, which would be to the right of the monster, intending to place his half-spear upon the floor but prepared to toss it there should the need to move more quickly present itself. He will shift from human form to the one for which he is best suited to physical combat and even as a dire bear, not wanting to risk harming any friends with a firestorm, he prepares to evoke mass bull strength upon everyone in the party.

Tam says, "It's huge, and it has 11 heads, all of them looking snake-like, with bull's horns. And that makes me nervous; in all of the stories I was told as a child, hydras had serpentine heads with top fins, almost draconian-looking. I've never heard of a hydra having bull's horns before. I fear it might be some sort of hybrid; but I'm no sage, just a guy who heard a few faerie tales as a child." Tam shudders for a moment, clearly trying to bring his fear under control.

Val speaks up, "Aye, it's likely a hybrid. Bull's horns might indicate Gorgon abilities. Prepare yourselves lads, lest ye find yourselves turned into statues by its breath." For once, the axe's voice carries no sarcasm, no haughty inflections. The axe's tone is somber and serious.

DC21; Check result = 27. (6 pts, over,)
This is indeed a hybrid (Common name: Demi-Gorgon Hydra.)

SPECIAL ABILITIES:

SA – Breath Weapon (Su): Turn to stone permanently, cone, 40 ft., every 1d6 rounds, 8/day, Fort save DC 22 negates.

SQ – Regenerating Heads (Ex): 11 heads, 12 hp each, can be severed with sunder attack made with slashing weapon. Successfully severing a head does 6 hp damage to the hydra’s body. 1d4 rounds after a head is severed, two new heads grow from its stump, up to maximum total of 22 heads at one time. Dealing 5 hp of fire or acid damage to the stump of a severed head before the new heads regenerate seals the stump and prevents regeneration.

Kamen nods..."I can be behind the beast in about two or three breaths..The best way to start the fight is a quick surprise where you bring prey down before it knows it is under attack."

He looks at the party, already moving unnaturally fast.

"If you give me that time, while you finish casting, I can attack first. I know how to avoid the prey smelling me out or dragons sensing me. Know that I change in fight, so don't be freaked out if you see a hybrid cat-stone creature. I understand if you want to maximize the use of your spell and start immediately, I'm going, you decide how much time you give me."

OOC: Given a distance, I need two full rounds to get close without taking penalty to stealth.

@Tellerian Hawke is there any light in there? Kamen is invisible to darkvision, but can also go invisible if needed to pass between two covers to maintain stealth. I could go invisible and just rush behind it?

OOC:
DM NOTE:
There is a dimly-glowing lichen covering most of the walls down here, along with the occasional magical torch. You know that they must be magical, or they would've sputtered out long ago. The glow of the lichen, combined with the flickering of the occasional torch, creates an eerie, shadowy, and gloomy environment, which is very dim, but not entirely dark.

Dewydd also conveys to the party that hydras have both darkvision and low-light vision.

OOC: Invisibility it is then. Unfortunately, I forgot dnd has two skills, so now single roll is move silently, invisibilty is immediate action so he goes full move until the room, half move invisible diagonally across the room until hidden by a wall on the right. I think he just makes it...checking now

Edit: going to N16 (9 squares), the diagonal plus straight 14 to w26, but half move is 28 squares. total 37 squares 185 feet...not enough to cross fully. grrr, then w20, hide behind the closer edge

Also, as swift action he activates the gauntlets

Kamen moves swiftly, unnaturally so, given the haste spell, but even so, almost double the speed you normally see. Just moments before going into full view of hydra, he disappears like he did earlier when the group unpetrified him.

With a small swirl of dust, he is out of sight.
OOC: Just for the record, going around S - E hall with full double move would get him to the same point
