And Jdvn1, what I meant to say was, why don't calculus teachers teach Liebniz notation from the very beginning. Both calculus classes I've taken have given Liebniz notation the merest lip service until the class hits differentials, when it takes over completely.

Calculus is, basically, differentiation and integration. Both of those use Liebniz's notation. Newton's notation is never used. I'm not sure what you mean--that the professors don't mention his name?

The only material that is normally taught before differentiation is limits, and some things to lead up to differentiation, the notation of which isn't specific to either mathematician.

Maybe I'm not sure what I mean. Calculus was a while ago, and I remember feeling blindsided by Liebniz notation when it was introduced. And I didn't know that Newtonian notation isn't used.
