The Ignorant Linger

Last week we pulled a stunt on the host of our game, and brought out the "ignorant linger routine" for him to endure.

For all of you who might not be in the "know", I'll elaborate. The ignorant linger occurs when the host makes it known that he wants everyone to leave, but yet is reluctant to come right out and say so. The ignorant part of the linger occurs when you push your host to the breaking point and he finally snaps to get you to leave.

It's great when everyone knows that it's going on, even the host, but he really doesn't want to have verbally invite you to leave.

The general hints that come out are, "All right guys, it's getting late.", or "Man, am I ever tired."

The ignorant lingerers then proceed to ignore all hints and force the host to the breaking point.

Does anyone else have any little games that they play to mess with peoples heads either before/after or during a game?

I wonder if anyone out there does this, or perhaps the Popinski?

Why would he refrain from asking you to leave? It's not rude or even impolite to do so.

I do agree with jgbrowning, my current group of friends does try to behave a little more on the mature side then this.

Bah!

I wasn't asking for your opinions on our childish antics, I was asking if any other groups had funnies that they pulled on one another for kicks. We know that it's rude, hence the "ignorant" part of ignorant linger. It's also what makes it funny.

And, seeing as you seem to want to know why we do such things, as they say on Fat Albert, "We're like school on Sunday. No class."

Sometimes they throw dice at me, does that count?

I'm with J Browning, and I would never do such a thing, but I've had it done to me before, and I noticed (good perception is very important when dealing with teenage players)... and promptly told them all that they should quit trying to play with me and start playing.

They were doing the 5 second delay. I say something, it always takes them till the count of 5 to react... Saw right through there bull...

My friends and I have the whole "I hate you miserable b*stards" shtick going. Actually, it's been going on for so long, we can never tell when somebody's truly upset. And I'd have no problem telling them to leave:

"Alright listen, after 6 hours in the same room with you deadsh*ts, I'm too bored to even look at you. Get out."

Every once in a while I am a bit too cryptic with a clue or my players are tired or for whatever reason they are stuck. Like most GMs I throw out another clue in some way to get the game moving and the players say, "Look! A DM BONE!"

I have no problem with ending the sessions, most everyone leaves of their own accord.. of course they congregate on the street in front of the house for hours. I've actually noticed them chatting when I was turning out the lights and going to be two hours later.. kinda odd..

"Honey, why are there three guys standing on the street in fron of the house." Pause to move blinds aside.." Oh it's just the guys.. time for bed."

I get drunk and threaten to kill their PCs.

My players get drunk and pretend to role play.

Then I kill their PCs.
