The Jade Frontier, part 2 (DM: THB, Judge: Lord Sessadore)

[sblock=xp]
While we're waiting...

XP Totals for Brenwar, Chey, and Miranna:

1032 (current xp) + 1250*2/5 (Emissary fight) + 750*2/5 (Prison fight) + 104*4 (time xp for four months) = 2248 xp

*smirks*

Sorry guys. So close. However, you can probably guess that you'll be leveling up after the next fight.

XP Totals for Firete and Yishim:

192 (current xp) + 1250*2/5 (Emissary fight) + 750*2/5 (Prison fight) + 83*5 (time xp for five months) = 1407 xp

And you two actually did get enough xp to level up. As with last time, I'm not actually expecting you to level up now. This is just so you can create your second characters for L4W, if you want. Also need Lord Sess to sign off on this. I'll PM him in a second.

Dang, I need to get you guys some more magic items.
I approve these awards.

And yeah, you probably should give them a couple magic items ;)[/sblock]

"Will charcoal do, there is plenty in the fire over there."

Chey escorts the hobgoblin through to the torture room, keeping a close eye on his every move, she keeps her tone quite friendly but there is something in her eyes that hints at less friendly emotions being kept in check.

Charcoal will be messy, but I guess it will have to do. Firete looks through her possessions. But the only thing that I have to use it on would be a page from my Ritual Book, and I don't want to tear a page from that unless I have to. I'll go take a closer look in the other room. Firete leaves and searches the room for something that will serve to write on.

[sblock=Perception]I'm taking ten (making it 11) as I want to find something to write on, and not particularly fussy. Is there ANYTHING in that room we can write on? Perhaps even rough leather, small flat slabs of stone, large pieces of treebark, flat pieces of wood even.[/sblock]

If there's nothing to write on, let's draw it on the floor and I'm sure I can commit it to memory. As Chey leads Rivith around the room, Yishim quietly asks Brenwar and Miranna, What do we do with him? I would prefer to let him go free instead of having him come with us.

You are able to cut a scrap of leather from the armor of the fallen. Rivith plucks a piece of charcoal and begins drawing a map. After a couple minutes he shows you his work.

From where you are, the passage to the east leads to a large complex of chambers. "The chief's quarters. Until recently. Believe he has been allowed to move down to lower levels. Probably just find Malgrim there. Malgrim low goblin," he kicks the body of one of the smaller goblins for emphasis. "Chief's new lieutenant. Bah. Treacherous worm."

The room to the west is apparently a store room.
"Malgrim keeps loot from raids there until ready to present them to chief. Might have something it wants. Or maybe just textiles and foodstuffs. Malgrim probably kept best for himself."

If you were to move back to the entrance, and take the eastern path from the first room, you would come to a portion of the keep that Rivith tells you has partially collapsed.
"Chief had some of the low goblins dig for lost treasure. Maybe they find some. Never heard."

The passage to the south quickly trails off.
"Never allowed here. Hear noises, not human, not goblin. Know entrance to lower levels is somewhere past here." He takes a sharp breath, "Also, tomb. Don't know whose. Some human."

Rivith hands you the map, steps back, and regards you evenly.
"Now, what will it do with me?"

The hobgoblin frowns to himself. "It asks if I will change. Interesting question. It assumes I won't just tell it what it wants to hear." He grins. "Very well. I will give it the truth. I do not know. Was it my mistake that led to this? Perhaps could have been avoided, were I cleverer. Or perhaps it is right. My path would eventually end here, no matter what. Fated."

Rivith crouches over the corpse of the masked hobgoblin.
"Knew this one for years. Comrade. No, friend. Or so I thought." He sighs, reaches down, and closes its eyes. He then stands and turns to face you. "Cannot tell if I will change. Too soon to tell. But, am willing to change. Willing to try. Perhaps need time alone. Company of other goblins not conducive to change in behavior. Cannot promise change, but will promise effort."

"There is my answer, human. Do as it wills."

[sblock=Insight 16]You believe Rivith is being honest, in his own weird way.[/sblock]

Firete draws the others close and speaks in a low voice to them. Considering everything, Rivith has helped us, and by what he says and the way he was treated I don't think he will betray us. I vote we should let him go...unless he should be brought back to Maoleth for questioning, that is.

Cheysuli whispers in reply "Although I have plenty of reasons to want this hobgoblin dead, believe me." Again there is a flash of great anger, or maybe it's hatred concealed in the tiefling's eyes, "I see something in him, and then there is his pure flesh. I was taught that those like him are touched by the Spirits for great destiny. I think, if we can elicit a promise to leave the keep from him in exchange for his life, he will abide by it, for a while anyway. With any luck, 'a while' is all we will need, so that is two of us, what are your votes?" Chey looks at Miranna, Brenwar and Yishim in turn.

"For my first choice, I'd say we put him back in the cell, but not bound. When we're done here, we bring him back to town, and to the local ruler's judgement. If we fail, he could claim to have not helped us, and perhaps his fellows might reclaim him, with their reduced numbers..." Miranna's voice is as harsh as ever, even in a whisper- a rasp like a file across metal. "But I doubt that would go over well. If he leaves this warren now, as he is, I'll let him go- but if we see him again, it is death without reprieve..."

OOC: Just FYI, Miranna will not agree to any plan that has him go with us. Not been proposed so far, but in case somebody was thinking it
