A new member of Vox Machina has received some surprising casting. Today at New York Comic-Con, Critical Role announced that Wayne Brady will voice Taryon Darrington in the upcoming fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina. Darrington, an Artificer writer looking for adventure, was originally played by Sam Riegel in Critical Role's first campaign. Other guest stars for the season include Kevin Michael Richardson, Debra Wilson and Tom Cardy.
The casting news is something of a surprise as it was expected that Riegel would voice his own character, much like the rest of the Critical Role cast. However, there's several possibilities for the re-casting. It could be to better differentiate Darrington from Scanlan Shortholt (who is also voiced by Riegel). It's also possible that the fourth season's recording coincided with Riegel's recent throat cancer diagnosis. Riegel revealed he had been diagnosed with oropharyngeal carcinoma. Riegel has since made a full recovery.
No release date has been announced for the fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina, but it's expected to be released in 2026. A fifth and final season of the show has already been confirmed.
