D&D 5E The Monetization of D&D and other Role Playing Games

Is there evidence for this or is it just a feeling?

I only ask because my experience is the opposite - since getting back into D&D one of the things that has really hooked me is the community of makers I have found online that were not accessible at all in the pre-internet days and existed in a state of constant fear of C&D letters and TSR's litigious attitude in the early internet days.

Is there less DIY than before but I am just seeing more because of the internet? Is there more because of the accessibility via the internet? Something else?

It is 100% just a feeling, and I really really doubt it's an accurate one.

D&D is pretty far away from a consumerist nightmare. You can have the basic rules of 5E for free and need to buy funny dice or use any number of free apps on your phone or computer. WotC hopes to lure you in with a first taste and then you're hooked.
If we were back on the 3.x treadmill of rebuying the same content after 4 years, I would be more concerned. There is always a collection contingent to any hobby, but you do not need to keep up with releases to continue to play the game. Most of the 'deluxe' editions come from 3PP and are to extend value to a niche product. The alternate covers of the WotC books is to help out FLGS more than for a collectors market.
I think we are in a good spot with D&D in the capitalist hellscape we live in.

There are more resources.

There is greater accessibility to resources.

But there is also less DIY at individual tables. There is far more reliance upon, and demand for, RAW. For official product.

When I think of DIY, I'm not thinking of using (for example) 3PP. I am thinking about people, at their own tables, creating their own things. DIY = do it yourself. I find that there is more reliance on official rules qua rules, as opposed to viewing rules as guidelines that can be accepted or discarded for the homegame.

But yes- the internet definitely allows for greater communication and sharing! Of resources, tips, and so on.

My personal impression is that if you look at the hobby as a whole - not just in the 5e D&D sphere - there is more DIY now in raw numbers than there was in the 90s, but that it's a smaller percentage of the whole because the size of the RPG playing population has grown so much (mostly in the D&D 5e sphere where the DIY side of things is less and it's mostly DMs creating their own adventures rather than cobbling together rules patches to fix problems they perceived).

It seems like a Basic Fantasy that creatives, and artists will survive w/o money. I mean coming from a disadvantaged background, I know some games are vanity works of trust funders and such, except those, and corporate would be the only ones that could do the production values that are the norm now, small publishers would be gone.

Though this is sort of like the toxicity in geek culture, this is part of a larger culture. Money is the way things are done, violently so even, for those that opposed it. Resources as well, like dtrpg, websites, etc. all need money to survive.

What I was implying is that the free basic rules are not separate from the consumerism, but part of it, part of the hooking and luring aspect. The hope, like with many other free products, is that not just that you buy more wotc products, but that you buy into the lifestyle brand and the idea of a community.

I don't have a lot of faith that any sufficiently large corporation--Hasbro counts--cares deeply about its employees and freelancers. That so many people can buy into dnd as lifestyle brand in order to support and handful of creators being able to have healthcare speaks to unsustainable levels of precarity already.

How do you know there's less DIY at individual tables? What's your source for that information? There might be more demand for official product, but maybe that's because there's much less of it than there were with other editions of D&D. Just think of the glut of products they had for 2nd edition. Were we ever a DIY hobby?
