The Mourning After (Horror) (IC)

Hades#2

Explorer
Xian looked at everything carefully during their journey, trying to memorize the path they took. The mists were interesting and yet his many dangers. He hoped to survive this journey and make it back to civilization. The House needed to know about what he had seen and experienced.

Maladiel seems troubled by the mist and the shapes he vaguely sees in it, but at the same time he is glad it muffles his footsteps somewhat.

Even though he appears uncomfortable, Mal is actually glad to be doing something again, even if it is dangerous. No good comes from sitting idly, and although he does not wish to face off against undead, the shady nature of his surroundings almost feel comfortable, reminding him of backroom politics and backstabbing.

OOC: Stealth Maladiel: 1D20+4 = [5]+4 = 9
Is there a chance of Advantage on stealth due to the mist?

Haven't leveled Maladiel yet; will do so soon.

When you exit the ransacked house, the mist ripples like a rock tossed into a still lake with each step. You can barely see the ground under your feet, and off in the distance you can see murky clouds where buildings and the spaces between should have been. Even in these ruins, there is a way east you can make out. A thin patch of mist lit up by some bent Everburning street lamps. The unnatural convenience of such a path is not lost upon you, and you cannot help but wonder if the mist itself was daring you to cross as Yelisha shepherds the group.

Some distance in, after a bit of false confidence seeps into your steps, causing Maladie to trip over a hidden bottle, which clinks off into a nearby alleyway. Despite holding your collective breath, the sound alerts the dead nearby. A ghoul mounted on a zombie clawfoot sniffs the area, noticing you, and charges.

GM: I'm going to try first-come, first-serve for this combat, mostly because I think it will be easier than trying to keep a proper initiative

Xian: You notice masses of zombie body parts twitching under the mist just ahead of you. The others were too preoccupied with the obvious threat to notice.

Maladiel releases his breath after the bottle stops clinking down the alleyway, and even though the appearance of an undead is most unwelcome, the half-elf is at least glad there is some clarity about what's hiding in the mist.

On instinct, the charismatic sorcerer reaches for the strange feelings he had during his dreams, only a few hours ago, as his fingers dance to the strange words coming out of his mouth without conscious thought.

To his surprise, a flash of light pierces through the gloom, starting just before Mal and streaking straight at the approaching ghoul. As it hits the creature, the light burns at it and remains glowing for a while, making the undead an easier target for his allies.

"By the Host," Maladiel breathes, impressed that it works and he has a new trick up his sorcerous sleeves.

OOC: I leveled Maladiel, giving him the new spell Guiding Bolt, and I want to try it in action straight away. :)

Guiding Bolt: 1D20+5 = [12]+5 = 17 (hit)
for 4D6 = [5, 6, 3, 3] = 17 radiant damage

Additionally, attack rolls on the ghoul have Advantage until the end of my next turn.

Does radiant damage deal extra damage to undead? I can't find it in the rules or the ghoul entry.

I plan on living forever. Or die trying.
OOC: Radiant damage will kill a zombie that otherwise gets a save to remain standing. Also, the ghoul remains at 1 HP :( !!!! I rolled min damage and missed with second attack even with the advantage.

@Leatherhead , add 2 Ki Points to Malix status line

Malix runs forward and around the fallen creature preventing it from running away easily. He stomps down on it trying to end the threat immediately. While the first attack connects, his second is foiled by the creature rolling aside under him and he stomps the cobblestones, barely grazing the undead.

He remains poised for counter attack either by the beast or the downed ghoul.

OOC: Oh, and I'll update my character one-line sheet with the most current numbers:

Maladiel. Speed 30, AC: 12, HP: 13/13, Passive Perception: 14, Spells: 3/4. FBTG: 1/1. SP: 2/2.

(SP means Sorcery Points.)

Legend
The rider was likely dealt with, but Lazharis knew that the mount was just as dangerous a threat, with a taste for living flesh. He took cover in the nearby yard and fired his bow, which struck the clawfoot in the side of its head.

OOC: He'll leap south over the fence if he can, or just stand next to a post. Shortbow Attack: 1D20+5 = [20]+5 = 25 crit for 2D6+3 = [3, 6]+3 = 12 & Sneak Attack 2D6 = [2, 4] = 6 Oh! I noticed that Lazharis' Passive Perception is 15. You have it at 14.

Round 2

The Ghoul, still blazing with radiant flames, contorts its broken body in unnatural ways, dying a second death as Xian's rapier pierces it.

The Clawfoot Zombie turns its attention towards the dwarf who dismounted its rider. While the dwarf readily blocks the rotting maw filled with teeth, the undead hunter uses its instincts and weight to pin the shield, while its decrepit claws find Ozzar behind it. 19 damage!

Ripples in the mists form, much like shark fins breaching the surface of water. From below the cover, a swarm of decaying and disembodied limbs lash out at Yelisha and Vesile. Fortunately, they saw the dangers in time, and were able to dodge.

Fun fact! In an alternate universe where I totally missed that Xian had killed the Ghoul, Ozzar would have been bleeding out thanks to a pack tactics bonus, while Malix would have been clawed and possibly paralyzed!

Malix uses the distraction hardy dwarf created to beat at the undead dinosaur. He slams his staff over the back of the beast as the closest part to hit. But then he uses that as leverage to jump up and next to it with leg extended high above his head and dropping kakato geri directly across the extended neck of the beast. The neck breaks under the sudden force with a crack and Malix lands straddling the cadaver.

OOC: kakato geri = heel kick or axe kick
OOC2: if zombie survives due to zombie resilience, leave Malix back in the original square, movement is for show only :)

Ozzar reels from surprisingly agile undead. Still, he has a job to do and centers himself moving back to support the casters and their charges.

"And I thought they were scary when alive," Maladiel remarks drily as he studies the decayed corpse of the clawfoot, a creature favored by the halflings he was brought up with.

Mal sees Ozzar carry on as if nothing serious has happened, but he knows the dwarf watchman is as stubborn as any of his kind. He quickly moves over and lays a hand on his ally, the magic inside him gently flowing from Khorovar to dwarf, healing wounds and injuries.

He almost sighs in relief, until the half-elf realizes there are more enemies about.

OOC: Cast Cure Wounds on Ozzar, healing him for 11 points.

"Damn!" Xian exclaims.

Thinking quickly Xian inspires Ozzar with an epic poem.
Using Bardic inspiration as a bonus action on Ozzar. Within the next 10 minutes he can roll a d6 and add the total to an ability check, attack roll, or saving throw.
Then he runs forward, rapier leading the way, to stab at the creature attacking his teammate.

Ozzar nods "Thanks! Now git! Let's get out of here!"
He remains standing in place though until everybody else passes him.

OOC: if Vasile or Yelisha don't move on their turns, he will go and attack the hands and try to save them.

Round 3

The Zombie Clawfoot falls inanimate from Malix’s artful assault.

Yelisha and Vesile disengage from the zombie masses, falling into the newly formed back-row, as Ozzar and Xian move to form a new front line.

Xian and Lazharis’s attacks prove to be less effective than either had hoped. While the blows were solid, the gangly mass of undead parts lacked any vital organs to stab at, resulting in only structural damage to the creatures. (Damage Resisted)

As Xian stabbed into the mass, the mass in turn surrounded and assaulted him. Countless body parts: arms, hands, feet, legs, eyeballs, heads, and entrales. Detached, twitching, and pulsing in a grotesque mockery of life. They batter the half elf with parts that a living foe wouldn't dare attack with, and constrict around him like a visceral broken snake. (10 damage, DC 12 STR Save or be restrained)

Ozzar, however, was ready for an attack, once again using his shield to defect the decaying claws and rotting meat that sought to rip apart his body and add it into their collective. Miss!
