The mysteries of the theurge...

The MT is still highly overestimated in my group. I still think it's just a wizard/sorcerer who can heal and has greater capability to face multiple encounters in the same day. Divine spellcasting doesn't add very much to the wizard's offensive repertoire, and trying to buff yourself with divine power and the like and taking a front line approach will get you killed very quickly (since you don't have a cleric's d8 for HDs). True, it's a bit hard to run out of spells, but you are still one character who can take a single standard action each round.
Of course, if haste was still the 3.0 version, then things would be different...
Personally, I prefer to focus in one area of spellcasting and take a prestige class with more "unique" abilities.
On the other hand, I have a small grudge against that "Arcane Disciple" feat (from Complete Divine also)....

Played an MT up to 13th level (Sorc/Cleric build though - so was effective cleric 9/Sorc 10 in the end), when it got killed by summoned beastie landing smack besides it, ripping his head off in just under two rounds. Shame.
Was great fun while it lasted, but slightly stressful, since I got pushed into the "main healer" role (no other cleric and a battle-fixated druid in the party), due to low HPs (D4 HP) and weaker overall armour (arcane spell failure.. )
Loosing the top one or two levels of spells in a class hurts plenty (and you only get to catch up at level 16/17 plus, and more than makes up for the greater number of low-level spells. Caster-level checks (SR and Dispels) are a real pain in the posterior, especially when facing outsiders. Damage-output from attack spells was likewise lower than for a dedicated caster. Same goes for lower save DCs on your own spells (one is hard pressed to keep 2 stats competitively high ), making enemy saves easier, reducing overall damage further. And you have only few meta-magic feats and slots to use them with to play around, limiting your options.
Practised spellcaster would have helped a lot with the SR problem and sometimes the damage output. In comparison to non-MT clerics, low HP and lack of armour sucked, especially as clerics/healers tend to draw an in-ordinate amount of enemy hostility IMCs, and the MT has the durability of a paper screen in melee without some severe buffs.

Oh, and despite the fact that you have loads and loads of spells, you can still only cast one per round....

Overpowered ? Not at all /though my GM griped mightily when I proposed the character, he never complained after some actual gaming ). Fun to play ? Definitely.

There are a few options to achieve something similar to the Mystic Theurge, while retaining full (or almost full) casting ability.

Magic and Spell domains, Initiate of Mystra feat, Arcane Disciple/Spontaneous Healer feats, for example.

I am starting a spirit shaman (CD) and wizard mystic theurge. In the last game I ran I had a cohort Mystic Theurge that illustrated what a few people have said.
1) They make a good 3rd caster in the party - not powerful enough to be the only cleric/wizard in the group.
2) They can buff like the dickens
3) can't survive melee combat despite the fact the have some offensive ability thier Hpts and Bab stink and usually self buffing is a waste better utilized in making a good fighter great instead of a sucky Theurge a okay fighter.

I plan to go Dweomerkeeper (Web enhancement for Complete divine) after I finish out Theurge. It fits thematically, Role playing and has nice ability synergy.

Kalamar Players Guide, usually elven class. It's essentially a sorcerer variant with wizards number of spells per day and sorcerers spells known (but gets higher level spells as soon as the wizard). No somatic components.
