Seeing the Shadowkin, a flood of thought rums through Whisper’s head simultaneously. So that he has to shut it off to deal with the immediate danger. “I was always thought Shadowkin were a myth. I never really believed in monsters that looked like people, possibly because they eat people, but here some are and they are looking at us like we are going to be breakfast.”

Seeing that the enemies are going to rush forward, Whisper feels no need to close. He loads a stone into his sling and charges it to generate a flash of light when it strikes.

Though the Shadowkin are in a frothing rush to attack the two young men, they appear to be interested in melee rather than trying to launch their crude javelins. They must cover the distance of about 50 strides but have barely begun to run before the projectile assaults of the two friends strike. While neither the dart nor the stone does much for damage, the magical addition of manipulation causes marked harm. The two struck stumble and are obviously hindered to some degree, but all four continue forward.

Training himself to be more efficient with a projectile than with his fists, Whisper intended to keep a distance, albeit short, from the Shadowkins. He would continue to launch charged stones while avoiding being drawn into melee. He says to Jaguar without taking his eyes from the enemy, “I wonder how that witch is able to use these monsters for her own ends.”

Jaguar Mahoao and Whisper prove to be quicker than their enemies, but the Echoes are able to close the distance to melee, and the two young men must try to avoid being struck. Jaguar shoots his dart into the same Shadowkin as before. The physical and mystical damage are significant in combination, causing the monster to fall. Whisper slings a new stone into the same opponent with equal effectiveness as the assault from Jaguar. His enemy loses consciousness and falls, as well.

With the enemies being quickly downed to two, the remaining ones demonstrate no competence in being able to hit either young man. All Echoes are subsequently dispatched, leaving two incapacitated and two unconscious. With the coyote-like yiping of the Shadowkin silenced, the normal sounds from the denizens of the environment return, but there is no sign or sound of the original quarry. It makes sense that she must have entered the pyramid by some means.
