The Mystery in Bridgetown

Whisper uses his carving knife to end his unconscious enemy. Haunts look like people, but most feel that they are something else. He has no difficulty killing the thing that attacked him. He incourages his friend to neglect the fallen and continue after the witch. “I doubt these Haunts have anything of value and the two females are not worth chasing down. I think we should continue after that witch. She is the key to something sinister that is brewing here.”

The two young men immediately respond to the dying information and quickly continue downstream. Having now gone farther from the village than ever before, they note the sights and sound that intrude upon them, but they do not stop to admire the surroundings, for a mission is at hand. There is a definitive path that has been used by both man and beast. At a bend in the river, making the near bank the shallow one, it seems that the witch has taken to a boat that was previously secured and hidden.

Staring downstream, perhaps a hint of the figure can be seen in the far distance. Sure she could have crossed the stream, but it seems more likely that she would be drifting it. Even at this distance inland, the river is significantly wide and crossing would be laborious. Having no desire to accept defeat, the two men continue to follow the river, hoping some sign will arise to guide them. As the light of day fades, camp is made.

Whisper will set some snares on land and a baited loop from any limb hanging over the river. “I am confident that this woman is not heading al the way to the ocean. It will take us time to catch her, but I think that she expects us to give up the search. I have no intention of quitting. Let us get some rest and continue on the morrow.”

Wild Jaguar will help to prepare the camp, then search for the right stones for his comrade's sling and slate or flint to make new darts. If he notice any herbs or anything useful, he'll examine it too.

During his search, Jaguar Mahoao is able to locate some medicinal herbs, particularly one measure of Soothe and one measure of Stimulate. He also finds one piece of Slate, one Bloodstone, and 5 nominal stones suitable for Whisper’s sling. Whisper is able to catch some small game and an edible fish, plenty of meat for the young men to have a meal. He also discovers 2 Lodestones, which can be used in his sling.

The two wake at first light, break camp, and continue on their quest, certain they are moving in the right direction. Being set upon a mission, they do not take the time to explore the new territory but simply move through it at a slow run that can be maintained for long periods of time. No dangers present themselves on this day. As the light of day begins to fade and the two must stop for the night, cursory examination of the area reveals the light of a small fire across the river. It seems likely that it could be the camp of the witch, who has used her boat to cross to the other side.

Whisper rubs his thumbs against his forefingers, a sign that he is thinking. “I do not know why, but I feel certain that the faint light of a fire we can see across the river is that stinking witch. It is too far to swim. We need to find something to help us cross, and I fear the two days it would take us to return to town for a boat will cost us her loss.” Lacking lumbering tools, Whisper will quickly look around the area for some suitable dead tree that he can move, something not too green or rotting, so that it will readily float.

"Last evening I was thinking too about building up something like a boat. I had no idea you can construct such a thing, the way that we will not drown, so I was rather thinking about keeping following the river on this site, until there's a bridge that we can use to safely cross the river. I saw this kind of construction near your town, and for me it's much better than a boat crafted in one evening. Yes; there's risk, that she may go farther from the river site, but this risk was the same yesterday. But if you say that you know how to make a boat, I'm ready to assist you as much as I'm able. We could also still continue going on this site of the river and maybe we'd find her boat that drifted to our site?"

The river is wide enough at this stage that if a person was standing on the far bank, a person on the near bank would barely be able to see that it was a person. Identification would be completely impossible. It was far enough that yelling across the water would be futile. With such expanse, the two young men quickly reject the possibility of a bridge spanning the distance.

It was not known if any civilized tribes lived farther along the river, but the previous discussion lent itself to moving farther downstream in hopes that something of benefit would present itself that would allow the two men to cross. Whisper had no idea how to make a boat. His idea had been to find suitable wood to make swimming easier and prevent a risk of drowning. As luck would have it, the two young men came across a fallen tree that had not been on the ground long enough to begin to rot, but it had dried.

With great effort and several breaks for rest, the log is finally pushed into the river and the two men wade in with it. The log does indeed float well and the two hold on with one arm as they pump their legs to propel it across the stream. The current cannot be fought and though the men make the crossing, they deduce that they are quite some distance downstream from where they had entered. This was to be expected and the two know that they need to track back upstream in hopes of picking up the trail of their quarry.
