The New Bionic Woman

I had the fortune (or misfortune) of seeing the original Bionic Woman pilot recently. And while I'll not deny how fetching Lindsay Wagner is :] , damn if this wasn't cheesiest two hours of TV that I've come across. I'm sorry, but those slo-mo effects and that classic "chichichi" sound are so horribly dated and unintentionally hilarious.

Which leaves me wondering why fans are so ready to trash this new series, on the basis that it's not the original, or that it doesn't use those old cheap ass effects, or that it's not Lindsay Wagner, etc. etc. :uhoh: Geez. I know many people like the original series, but it was hardly a sterling example of well made scifi television.

I for one, am looking forward to this new series, for a number of reasons. To see how they update the story to today's world. To see how today's effects handle the bionics. And to see Michelle Ryan, whom I fancy a great deal. :]

Happens every time. BSG, for a prime example. I think studios know better than to listen to the online wailing and gnashing of teeth, and just see how many people watch it.

Yeah. I thought the fiasco over the new BSG was uncalled for. If fans wanted the original, then they should watch the bloody original! No one's forcing them to watch the new show. Ronald Moore did make it clear that his take was going to be drastically different, so I feel he was unfairly demonized by many people. Stupid fanboy whining.

EDIT: But back to the topic at hand. I'm liking how this new series is shaping up. Good to see that Katee Sackhoff will have a regular gig after BSG ends. And it's a hoot to see Miguel Ferrer (whom many will remember from Robocop) here! Heh. From one cyborg to another. :p

I occasionally get annoyed with the concept of revamping an old series -- I'd rather see a completely original series than see someone try to modernize a show from decades ago -- but then I remind myself that that's more or less what almost every author and playwright has been doing since the dawn of time, and I get over it. :)

I think that the show has potential. Ditto P-Kitty on not being wowed by the acting, but if the mythology of the show is good enough, I can deal with that.

I've noticed that many shows have so-so acting in their pilot and maybe the first couple of episodes. I've always attriubted it to the actors and the directors still getting a feel for the characters and the show itself. It isn't that different than the way a RPG player might run a new PC a little tentatively for the first few sessions until they really have a chance to feel comfortable with it.

As long as the story itself is decent, the acting has to be really bad to make me give up before seeing a couple of episodes.

A lot of it is because fans of the new show feel the need to trash the old show (which they didn't like).

Plus modern stuff is just as cheesy now as the stuff from the 70s, it's just that it's not as obvious now as it will be 30 years into the future. I guess some things do hold up, but most are products of their time. While you are in that era, it seems great. But later on, not so much.

Anyway, I just hope this means we'll see the original show (or the 6 million dollar man) on DVD.
