D&D 5E The new Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set - and online tools?

Once again... people freaking out over a lack of information they couldn't do anything with even if they had it.

We finally got our release dates for the products. Great. Lot good that's done us... we still have to wait three months for it. So glad they told us those dates, cause our lives are sooooooo different now that we have it. Thank GOD they gave that to us!

And you know... if only Mike would tell us what that step between the Starter Set and the Big 3 was now... a full two months before the Starter Set goes on sale and we can actually make use of the information... you wouldn't BELIEVE how different our lives would be!

We'd spend every day here on ENWorld making happy posts, rather than complaining! Yeah! And isn't that what WotC wants?!? A few dozen forum posters thinking happy thoughts rather than getting upset?!? Can't they see how important that is? Why would they possibly want to do anything that wouldn't result in a bunch of threads complaining about the lack of information? Don't they GET IT? We NEED this information in order to just sit on it and have it serve absolutely no purpose in our lives until two months from now.

Why Wizards PR doesn't see the wellspring of importance all of us on ENWorld serve, I have no idea. You'd almost think that we actually don't matter than much in the grand scheme of things. But that couldn't possibly be it, could it? Naw!!!

Dude, these higher-than-thou posts dripping with sarcasm and contempt are getting a little tiresome. Calm it down, please. If you don't want to discuss the subject, let those who do want to to do so. Thank you.

[Me - We are missing something. Something we have not considered. Something new.]

Like I said, Mike has said that explicitly: "Sorry, we're still finalizing things, but I think we have a pretty nifty plan. The stuff we haven't talked about yet is where DMs and players go next - there's a step between the Starter Set and the Big 3."

(Huh; on the white skin the quote highlight colour is exactly the same as the moderation colour. That's inconvenient!)

Yeah I saw your reply and immediately thought "Uh oh what did I do now?"

My guess is this is an app, and they are waiting on Apple's final approval (don't need much Droid approval).

More from Pundit

Q: From what everyone is saying (Mearls, Pundit etc), we will be getting character creation by way of a separate free PDF or online character generator, which is exactly what we got under 3e and 4e. Trying to distinguish this release from them is simply obvious bias.

A: If that was all there was to it, I would be less impressed with the plan.

We are definitely missing something. I am very interest to learn what that is eventually.

That's been my guess, too. Perhaps with something in the boxed set to point you at it.

It only costs one person in the group $6/month - indeed it's outright silly to not share an account, because then the DM can't look at your characters and so on!

I agree that Silverlight was a dumb choice, but "OMG FINDING A WINDOWS PC IS SOOOOO HARD!" rings very very very very false to me
Bolded bit is simply untrue, by the way. Not even arguable. Effective and optimized are not the same thing.
With only one account, only one person can use it at a time. Leveling up takes 5x as long. The business model gets in the way of convenience.

Regarding silverlight, my main objection isn't finding a PC as opposed to a Mac, but that I can't use it on my smartphone or tablet and have to export/import to get them there and that there are some implementation issues with some (most?) of those 3rd party tools where not every stat matches the character builder. Typically the defences. My friends don't bring their laptop to the game either, they bring their tablets and use the import/export feature. Not to cool when you get a new magic item. We usually add them out of session, the one-at-a-time export/import together with a very slow application (at least in Norway) makes it ineffective to do in session.

Regarding the use of the word Effective, you are quite right, I should have used the word "Efficient". Both words translates to the same word in Norwegian, "Effektiv".

The point is, it's still vastly superior to not having it.
I fully agree with you here. I just don't think it's all that good. If I wanted to rate it, it would get a 6/10. It was good to have but could have been done much better. The easiest feature to implement would be the grading that the wotc charop forum does. It would have made it a good tool for the novices as well instead of swamping them with bad choices.

It's speculation from my side, but I am pretty sure 5e is going to have much better digital support than 5e. Hopefully the issues I mention above gets resolved. My guess on how it's done:
- html 5 as the platform instead of silverlight
- html 5 design that scales according to device with css
- srd a lot like pathfinders
- character builder

I don't think they will go the app-path, mainly because it becomes a huge maintainance issue with ios, android, windows phone, windows and mac support. Creating it all in html 5 would servce all platforms.

Didn't Mearls wax about fiddling with a character on his phone in the airport? I think this was in the Pax interview on the multimedia nature of 5e. That sounds like a character generation app to me.

It's not an ad. Pundit already went to some lengths to explain that.

Sorry, imho, it's an add. One that needs the targets to work at to make go. No thanks.

If whatever this secret is is so much better than having chargen in the starter set, then why have chargen in the PHB? After all this secret thing is so much better right?

An app would be cool, if chargen was also in the starter set, a pdf would be cool, if chargen was in the starter set, something handed out at encounters and free rpg day would be cool, if chargen was in the starter set.

There are kids and families I was considering giving the starter set to that do not have an iphone or any kind of smartphone.
