The NEW EN World FREE Character Portrait Request Thread

Knightfall

World of Kulan DM
Ok, the old thread is very cluttered and sort of died with an over abundance of requests. Thus, I figured it was time to start a new request thread for character portraits.

Now, let's remember the rules. Post descriptions for the most part, SOME character background, and lets stay away from tons of character statistics. If your request has specific armor, weapons, or the like describe them visually, not with statistics.

Note that this thread is for character portraits only. Monsters and the like should be requested somewhere else.

Also remember this is a FREE request thread and there isn't any guarantee that your request will be filled. Most artists, in the past, have chosen projects based on what they read and liked about the character.

Now for the kicker, this thread won't just be for fantasy based characters. We're opening the thread to all genres, fantasy, scifi, science fantasy, horror, modern, future, apocalyptic, pulp, etc.

In other words, this thread is taking it to the next level people.

So lets get some requests going and all those artists who want in, chime in on this thread. If it turns out you really like a artists style and are willing to pay them for something more substantial then I suggest you get in contact with them by e-mail.

Cheers!

I've got two characters that I would love to have any artist take a crack at.

First,

Name: Tobias Danior
Race: Human
Age: 17
Gender: Male

Appearance: Tobias is, in most regards, an average man. He stands at 5’10 with a lean body from years of travel and training. His head is topped by closely cropped black hair. A slightly pointed nose and a wry grin both serve to set off his green eyes that seem to always have a subtle gleam of laughter. The years spent traveling on the road during his apprenticeship has darkened his skin.

His clothing is simple, traveling fare. Tobias likes to be able to blend into a crowd when he needs to and feels that his skills can help him stick out if the need arises. Because of this, he favors earth tones in his clothes, nothing terribly bright, but practical for traveling the dusty roads of Quen. Simple brown boots that lace up slightly over his ankles blend into his plain brown pants that are held up by a worn leather cord. Strapped to the cord is a beat-up sheath that holds a rather plain rapier. He wears a slightly lighter brown tunic with sleeves that hang loosely over his wrists. Though he doesn’t often wear it, he does carry a cloak for the times that he may need to block the harsher elements. He also keeps a hat for donations though he doesn’t wear it often.

Picture: Tobias is a storyteller that uses magic to create illusions to illustrate his stories. I would love to see him sitting down with a smile on his face and his hands spread or cupped with a floating image between them as if he was telling a tale or just practicing. The magic is based around manipulating light so any light effects that you would want to add would be interesting.

That's my vision though. I'm open (and excited) to see others.

Second,

Name: Garren Renier
Race: Human, but has been magically altered
Age: 20
Gender: Male

Appearance: Garren is 6’10 feet (around 2.1 meters) and for all intents and purposes appears as a seamless suit of armor. His head looks like a helm with a long narrow, black void for his eyes and a square indentation with four holes where his mouth would be. The top of the helm is tapered slightly. His body as a whole has the defining look of muscles without the real detail of skin. His form appears masculine in build, but has no distinctly male parts being effectively neutered by the process he underwent. His feet do not have individual digits, but have been fused to appear as a solid boot. As his appearance can create a range of reactions among people, he has taken to wearing a rather large, gray wool cloak. While it doesn’t completely hide his appearance, it does give enough cover to allow the illusion of a knight in armor. He wears his sword and shield strapped on his back over the cloak.

I will skip the background as it isn't vital. Both characters can be found at www.quentriandal.com if you would like more info.

Picture: This was an attempt to create a different take on the knight and shining armor stereotype. Feel free to touch up the details slightly (give the helm your own feel, tatter the cloak,). The key here is that he shouldn't be ornate or heavily detailed. A hybrid type challenge for the artists I suppose. The key features are the void strip for his eyes and the indentation (I'm not married to a straight square there if you can add something dynamic to it without becoming to ornate) with four holes. Ideally the picture would emphasize his size and power or the tragedy of the character (he's a man transformed into a suit of armor) so perhaps a simple scene of him looking off in the distance with the wind blowing his cloak. I'm excited to see whatever you may think is best for the picture.

Thank you for your consideration.

*edit* I suppose I should note this as well. If you have an idea or a concept for one of the above that would transcend the generosity of a free portrait, please send me a message with your idea, a link to some of your work, and maybe a preliminary sketch and we can discuss a possible commission. I can be reached by email at matthan753 at juno dot com

Regardless of that, I look forward to seeing the new artwork to come from this thread and want to thank the artists' beforehand for their generosity.

I have a couple of characters that might be interesting to portray and that I'd love to have a nice picture of...

Shorter descriptions

Fareena the Cook
Human Sorcerer 22yrs old

Fareena is a red-headed orphan with a fiery temper, and who specialises in fire and enchantment magics. She is slim, short and slight of build.

She has a mane of curly red hair tied back with a triangular kerchief like a cook might wear. She wears fairly down to earth cooks clothes and apron, although they are quite burnt and worse for wear.

She uses a staff of fire, and she can often be found wreathed in a fireshield spell. The only other noticeable ones are a circlet with diadem across her brow, some simple engraved magic bracers and a tortoise-shell amulet

Li Kung the Monk
Human Monk age 18

Li Kung is oriental in appearance, short but heavily built. The top of his head is shaved, but he has a long braid that hangs down his back. He is Lawful Evil and seems to have a perpetual sneer on his face. He has a long, swirling coat - a little "matrix" like in style and magic bracers.

He wields a badly chipped glaive and his classic pose is one in which the glaive blade is pointing down and to the side/rear.

He has lots of spike shuriken in easy to reach locations (wrist, arm, belt, leggings).

Better length descriptions?

Fareena is a red-headed orphan with a fiery temper, and who specialises in fire and enchantment magics. Sold into servitude as an infant, she worked as a cooks assistant and gradually worked her way up to head cook. She always had an aptitude with fire and made up little pretend charms to keep the heat away or start fires.

She has a mane of curly red hair that gets in the way if she doesn't keep it tied back in some way (she normally wears it fairly loose though - not tied into a ponytail, just off her face. I'm thinking of a triangular kerchief like a cook might wear). She still wears fairly down to earth cooks clothes and apron, although they are quite burnt and worse for wear now. She isn't very strong (str 8) so she is probably quite slim-limbed.

Her current favourite magic item is a staff of fire, and she can often be found wreathed in a fireshield spell. The only other noticeable ones are a circlet with diadem across her brow, some simple engraved magic bracers and a tortoise-shell amulet (natural armour).

Her general demeanor is friendly and open, but she can be very intimidating if she chooses, so she could be drawn with either a very open friendly expressio n or an extremely haughty intimidating one (the benefits of a huge charisma)

Li Kung the Monk
Human
Age 18
Class: Monk 3

Li Kung is oriental in appearance, short but heavily built. The top of his head is shaved, but he has a long braid that hangs down his back. He is Lawful Evil and seems to have a perpetual sneer on his face as he looks down on the smelly westerners he finds himself adventuring with. His sharp eyes don't miss much.

He wields a large glaive which is badly chipped after a recent fumble, and he has a long, swirling coat - a little "matrix" like in style. He uses the glaive in an oriental style and his classic pose is one in which the glaive blade is pointing down and to the side/rear.

He has a couple of dozen shuriken (spike style), about half of them are hidden around his body, half are in easy to reach locations for quick throwing. Some magical bracers have just been added.

He is very good at jumping, tumbling and balancing and could be drawn either in a very dynamic pose or equally in a quiescent pose - relaxed and yet ready for action in any direction.

(a much newer character, not as well developed yet)

Can you work with either/both of those Robert?

Cheers,
Plane Sailing

Hey!

I just wanted to stop in and say that I'd be interested in doing some free character portraits. I think this thread is a great idea. However, with school just starting, I'm pretty busy so I can't promise anything in the near future.

I also want to stress, even though it's been said before, it's best if you stay away from listing your character's stats. Most artists will probably skip yours if it's too long. All we really need is a physical description, a description of any special objects, and a little bit of character/personality information. Anything else we need cleared up, we can always just ask :)

So, hopefully I'll get a lag in homework and be able to get started on a few of these :)

Here are three characters that I would like done.

Haldir
Half-Orc
Druid

Haldir stands at 6'5" and seems to be all muscle. He has longs black hair, kept in a neat braid. Haldir wears fine clothing (he also wears a silk glove on his right hand), and has a scimitar with runes in it on his left side.

Favorite Equipment:
+1 Scimitar or Flame blade (as the spell)
Glove of Magic Missile
Anhkeg Hide Armor (as in armor made from an anhkeg's hide)
Anhkeg Large Shield (as in a shield made from an anhkeg's hide)

Cade Bigfeet

Description: a halfling of average height and build with short light-brown blondish hair, tied with a thin red band. He wears a red tunic and brown trousers, and black boots all of good quality, over which he wears masterwork studded leather armor. Two large daggers hang from a belt on both sides.

Rurik Ungart

Rurik is a short muscular dwarf with very strange features, mainly tattoos that run all around his body. These tattoos seem to form one big picture, including designs of a dragon, a brightly burning star, and a very old tree that seems to have a dwarves face carved into it. His hair and beard are gray and his skin is slightly tan. Judging by the way he holds his weapon he is thought to be right handed. Beside the tattoos he has two other noticeable features about him: a large scar across his left eye, and a strange scar across his right forearm. One of his noticeable personality flaws is that he usually doesn’t eat things given to him by others mainly because he has some trust issues due to several attempts of assassination on his life.

Carradei Carrus from D&D 3.5

Carradei appears to be a human of middling height with a thin build and unruly red hair that can't seem to stay fixed. His eyes, however, flare with psionic power and reveal his true ancestry as an elan. He stays fashionably dressed in an ensemble of tunics, vests, cloaks, and his personal symbol, the tulip, is nearly always evident. Carradei also never goes anywhere without his trusty punching dagger and heartwarming smile.

Akela Keiko-Sho from SW-Revised

Keiko-Sho is a tall and thin young man with a very youthful appearance. His blond hair is cut short, and his clothing is festooned with pockets, hooks, straps, and all manner of devices through which he may attach his tool collection. Duct tape is occasionally used to hold his works together, somethings even repairing torn clothing. His well-crafted blaste pistol hangs uncomfortably on his side. He is an inquisitive genius with a penchant for madcap plans.

Hi all, just chiming in to say that, so far, I like Hammerhead's simple decriptions the best. ThornMD's are ok too, but remember to try and stay away from stats people.

Plane Sailing, Matthan, you two might want to trim down your descriptions a little bit. Long descriptions are daunting for anyone to read.

And hello Miranda_Asch, I hope to see some portraits from you on here when you have a chance.

Cheers!

Feanor Alendi (D&D 3.5 druid/illusionist)
Feanor is a human male in his late-twenties, short and of light build, with perhaps some faint elvish blood. He has emerald eyes, short chestnut hair, and pale skin for someone who spends as much time outdoors as he. His most noteworthy accountrement is his totemic cape made of eagle (or other raptor) feathers. Underneath he wears wyvernhide breastplate and a number of scrolls tucked under his belt. His familiar, Wyst, is a small white-bellied sea eagle, often perched on Feanor's arm or shoulder. His animal companion, Magaran, is a large grey husky that looks far more physically intimidating than Feanor himself and stays close by to defend him. Feanor casts spells moving only his lips to speak and so often keeps both hands in use, for instance with a scimitar in one and a scroll clutched in the other.

Heh, I thought I *was* trim :)

I've edited my post to make it shorter (and kept the original longer ones in a small quote for reference in case I want the description again!)

Cheers

Well I disagree with the premise, but I can give you short descriptions.

Tobias Danior (human male 17)
-looks normal
-storyteller who uses illusions to illustrate stories

Garren Renier (living suit of armor)
-big and wears a cloak
-has a sword and shield
-eye slot is a black void in the shape of a rectangle
-mouth area is a square indention with four holes at the corners (one at each)

I personally don't find that good reference, but if it helps an artist visualize it then I suppose it did its job. I took the descriptions as reference material for the art. If I was wrong in that, here is the corrected version. If an artist would like more details on what the characters look like, it is above in my original post.
