The New Style

I can see that happening, actually. I was watching a collection of 80s cartoon theme songs on Youtube and, while I recognized most of them, there were several cartoons I hadn't heard of ("Defenders of the Earth??? Blackstar???). My family also visited Canada when I was young, where I first watched Sabre Rider and the Star Sheriffs. I had never seen the show down in the States and was instantly a fan. :) Alas, it apparently never aired where I was living.

It not only holds up awesomely well for an 80s cartoon, it stands head-and-shoulders above most cartoons being made currently.

I think it does even a better job than most cartoons we watch these days. We only have anime showing on TV now. A whole generation of kids growing up watching those, I fear for tomorrow.

We needed D&D Cartoon 2, to teach this new generation the good old western values!!

CBS, Saturday mornings . . . I want to say 6:30 AM Central time. I know it was on early, because during my Saturday mornings spent watching cartoons in the 80s, I only caught it semi-regularly.

I also remember seeing the D&D game materials in the 1984 Sears Christmas catalog. :)

A few months ago, I bought the DVD set and sent it to my nephews, aged 3 and 5. My sister was amused/irritated that it was the ONLY thing they wanted to watch for several weeks.

I thought it was Saturday mornings. Eastern Time here so it would have been 7:30AM. My mother was going to college on saturdays so my sister and I were routinely dropped off at my grandmothers first thing in the morning. Anything my sister wanted to watch usually started at 8 or 9AM so she didn't argue much about watching D&D regularly. But yea, I would have missed it if it wasn't for my mother going to college.

I wouldn't say that it holds up well. A friend bought the DVD and we watched a couple of episodes in April. Like I said, it was cool until the nostalgia wore off.

Compared to cartoons now? Depends on what you're comparing them too. I haven't watched Saturday morning cartoons in 20 years (being 33) so I can't tell you much about what kids watch tody, but I certainly have seen some dreck.

BUT, there are some absolutely awesome adult audience cartoons in the 30 minute format that simply nuke the D&D cartoon into the stone age. I mean, come on. South Park? The Simpsons? Drawn Together? Family Guy? A bunch of random stuff from Adult Swim? You're telling me the D&D cartoon is better than those shows?

And cartoons in the 80's that were better? Easy as pie. Thundercats. Transformers. The Smurfs. And that doesn't even cover all the weird stuff I saw in the 80's that was probably actually done in the 70's, IE Starblazers and their brethren. Heck, even the cartoon that had Scrooge McDuck and his nephews (whatever it was called) was better. Or at least better drawn and less repetative.

But hey, IMHO and all that.

But these are adult cartoons. D&D was for kids.
Comparing to nowadays kid's cartoons, D&D is awesome.

I admit I don't watch a lot of kids cartoons today, but I'll take Legion of Superheroes over the D&D cartoon anyday.

Me too. The old Xmen and spiderman series from the late 90's and alse the Batman animated series from 90's were great too. But even if they are cartoons for kids, most episodes have a very adult thematic.

Most cartoon theses days that pass on my TV at least are anime. Damn it, even Teen Titans is anime!

All IMHO, of course:

The D&D cartoon is far better than South Park, Drawn Together and the entirety of Adult Swim put together in a blender (can you tell I don't like these "adult" cartoons?).

Comparing the D&D cartoon to current kid stuff like "Ed, Edd & Eddy", "Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy", "Fairly Odd Parents", "A.T.O.M.", "Max Steel", "Totally Spies", "Winx Club", "W.I.T.C.H.", "Johnny Test", etc? The D&D cartoon was so much better, more than two decades ago!
