The other War of the Worlds movie that is coming out this year.

I am more interested in this version than Steve's. If I want to watch his version I will pop in ID4 tonight....
See, that's another example of the close-minded off-hand dismissal I was talking about. Presuming that Spielberg's War of the Worlds will simply be a remake of ID4 is presposterous.

Given how the MAJORITY of new movies are rehashes of the older ones, I take each new alien invasion movie with a grain of sailt. Look at the trailer for instance, all of the cars all trying to get out of town, just like in ID4. I really hope that the bigger budgeted movie will prove me wrong BUT honestly what is the chance that it will be different and innovative. At least the smaller budgeted one is going for a closer adaptation.... if Speilberg was doing that I wouldn't be so hesitant about it.

 Why the hate for something mainstream? What evidence do you have that the "other one" will be better, other than it doesn't star Tom Cruise and obviously isn't mainstream?

I'm looking forward to it because it is actually trying to tell H.G. Wells' story.

Spielberg's version will annoy for the same reason that I Robot & Starship Troopers annoy me. I'm tired of Hollywood using the names of classic sci fi works as nothing more than name recognition for unrelated movies.

From a technical standpoint Spielberg's film will no doubt be far superior, but it will not share the soul of the original story.

I honestly don't understand the penchant amongst my fellow geeks for automatically bagging on anything that looks like it might be popular.

Painting with a broad brush a bit aren't we?

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The I, Robot movie, for instance, that you mentioned was considerably better than it would have been if it had tried to be a faithful reproduction of Asimov's story.

Nope, not at all. With two responses in this thread that I'm specifically pointing to, I'm not sure why you think I am.

For your take on the movies I guess that is what I was trying to say but you said it so much more eloquently. Thanks.....

I'm definately with Joshua on this one. I like a film based completely on my enjoyment of it, not whether or not other people like it. So if no one has ever seen it and I like it, I still like it. And if it's the biggest thing to hit the film industry in years and I like it, by golly I still like it.

::scurries off to hide Star Wars and Lord of the Rings DVDs since they are too mainstream to own as a nerd::

The main thing as pointed out before is if you like it, great. If everybody liked the exact same things there would be no room for improvements anywhere or discussion.
100% agree. I do have an issue with throwing something to the wolves based on pretty shaky assumptions though. Like, "Tom Cruise is in it, it will suck!" or even worse, "It's a mainstream blockbuster, it's just going to be ID4 rehashed!"

There's a difference between having different tastes from each other and making broad condemnations based on little or no information.

I agree I should have restructed my wording. I love Minority Report and I am sure others don't. I guess I need to look back when I was younger and liked movies for what they were and not read into them too much. Like the first time I saw SW:A New Hope or Dune on the big screen. Ah those were the days....
