The Passion of the Christ

First Post
I saw the Passion of the Christ Thursday night.

I've been a fan of Mel Gibson ever since Braveheart, but his recent movies (The Patriot, Payback, etc.) had been disappointing. Although I knew lots of people had gone to see the Passion, I was prepared for the fact that this movie might not be as good as Braveheart, especially since Mel Gibson wasn't starring in it.

Instead, I was blown away.

The Passion was the best movie I have ever seen. I don't think its even fair to compare other movies to it.

I can't decide whether or not to see it. My best friend said:

I think the film is absolutely worth seeing, as an object of evil comparable with The Triumph Of The Will. Be prepared, though. Rent it if you like. Don't let the kids get a look at it, unless you want to permanently compromise their sleep.

So, I rented "Triumph of the Will" from netflix and watched it. Not sure I want to sit through something like that again.

I liked it, though found a lot of objectionable things from both a religious and historical perspective. It certainly didn't make my top 10...or even top 50 probably, even though I did enjoy it.

To me it just looks like a really long Snuff Film.

Sounds like the same opinion as Christopher Hitches, who also called it a snuff film. Amusingly enough, he didn't see it, either. All I can say is, if it looks like a snuff film to you, then that's just you. What I saw was as far away from pornography as anything can be.

I think the film is absolutely worth seeing, as an object of evil

An object of evil which has so far led to four criminals turning themselves in and confessing their crimes after seeing the movie (A man who murdered a woman carrying his baby, a neo-nazi who bombed some anarchist squatters in the mid-90's, another man who murdered his girlfriend and had gotten away with it after her death was ruled a suicide, and a fugitive from a two-year-old bank robbery), which has DECREASED anti-semitism by 7%, and which, instead of convincing Muslims in the Middle East to become suicide bombers, has instead convinced them to look for copies of the New Testament in countries in which conversion away from Islam is illegal? That's the definition of an "object of evil"?

IMO, this is a fantastic movie. Kudos to Gibson, Caviezel, et al for putting out such an amazing movie. I'm planning on seeing it at least once or twice more before it leaves the theatres.

I'm happy to stay off the politics/religion subjects that are frowned upon at ENWorld, but this is too funny to not comment on. I had a vision of this guy staring at a screen measuring how much anti-semitism has risen or fallen :p

From an objective or aesthetic standpoint it's certainly possible. You wouldn't call Salmon Rushdie's The Satanic Verses a bad book because of the effects it had on society at large. Or maybe you would, but not many people would take your side if you did. How much sense, then, does it make to praise this movie for the same reasons?

I'm not passing any judgment on the film, though. Your logic may have lapsed here, but I suspect that only someone ideologically opposed to the story itself could call it an object of evil. I don't think I've ever seen an actively evil movie--plenty of bad ones, sure, but evil? Nah.
