I'm of the same opinion: the DM has complete control over the setting, the NPCs, the adventures, and rules arbitration. In return, I have complete control over my PC. In all areas where these two principles come into conflict, it is the responsibility of both parties to find a satisfactory compromise for both parties. That can include the DM giving up some of his control over setting or adventure to accommodate the PC and it can entail the player to compromise on his character concept to fit the world or adventure. The important thing to remember is neither party has automatic right to their pov trumping the other; the player's vision doesn't overrule the DMs game and the DMs game doesn't overrule the player's vision.
