Sorry, I know it's a long quote and a short (off-topic)response, but as a teacher of writing, I think that HSB deserves proper credit for the poetic flair of his post. Thanks, HSB: sadly, ENWorld is sometimes my bastion of literary talent, my point of light, in a world of drearily pedestrian darkness. The effort you have put forth in choosing your words has brightened my day.
*Bows Floridly*Why thank you Arbiter ;)
Writing Teacher, ouch. As a history teacher (okay student teacher but the certificate is soo close) I know what you're talking about. Every time a high school student can't point out the location of Greece or Mesopotamia it makes me wince.

You do realize you just described an atmosphere of hostility.
Nobody's who is excited about 4E really cares to hear those same things over and over again from the people who aren't. Consequently, when those people keep saying them over and over again, it is they who make themselves unwelcome.
We don't like to hear from people who aren't excited about our new shiny so we don't want to hear from them anymore. No matter that the site has been a 3e site full of 3e people for nearly a decade and 4e is the new guy. Because they say things I don't like to hear we should make them feel unwelcome in what has been their domain.
