The Retaking of Forgehold - 4E

On the way back to the inn, Mal ponders the situation.

-''The job is straightforward enough. He was even upfront about the fact that dwarves won't want us to go there because the site is sacred.

But I don't understand how he could have known about my family and Mira's departure. The news was brought in a letter and wasn't widely discussed. Obviously, it's not impossible information to find out... but it's impossible to discover unless you are paying specific attention.

You can't be opening and resealing ALL incoming letters or having spooks travelling will ALL caravans and reporting ALL gossip in the hope that it will be useful. It's logistically impossible. If house Deluna knows about Mira and I having a family situation, it's because they gave their spy network orders to look into us before we even reached the city.

I'm not very confortable with that. We'll have to watch what we say and where we say it for the foreseeable future.''

I understand your concerns, sir Malenkirk. comments Arden, toughtfully, ...but on the other hand, it's normal for such organization to gather intelligence on their eligible employees. Apparently they even know about our deeds during the journey to Forgehold...

-''It's normal to gather intelligence after you've met potential employees, Arden. Not before.''

Not quite. Didn't you get the impression, sir Malenkirk, that the eladrin knew beforehand that he would have offered us this employement, and that we were going to accept it. My impression is that house Deluna is researchin potentially... interesting individuals to offer them allegiance, probably their condition is worse than the rumors say, and they need such an aggressive approach in order not to fall behind their competitors... In a way, we might feel flattered...

-''Of course I got the impression that they knew beforehand! That's the whole point I'm making. I may have a high opinion of myself, but you seem to have an even higher opinion of our value. Always remember that we're mercenaries, and still fairly green ones. Mercenaries fall in the 'expendable' category, Arden. Especially for nobles. So I'm sorry but feeling flattered isn't my first instinct in our situation. Yes, they may just be looking for valuable assets more agressively than usual... but they might just as well be looking for patsies in a game that we don't yet understand. We can hope for the best and the job seems on the level but stay on guard and stop trusting these guys implicitly, they've done nothing yet to earn it.''

Upon reaching the inn, Mal fills the other on the contract and about his misgivings.

The greater the risk, the higher the prize! whispers Arden at Mal as they reach their comrades. He smiles reassuringly and orders a cup of wine, satisfied with the results of the day...

ooc:liking this game of opposite views...

As you all are relaxing at the in, a young man comes over to you all, he carries a paper detailing the contract with House Deluna. All is as expected, but the mission is spelled out as "per earlier verbal discussion.

-''Hmmph. Figures. People who intercept courrier aren't gonna trust it themselves. All right people. Time to pack up the essentials, we're going to the docks.''

[sblock]Unless anyone object, Mal proceed to dock, rents whatever type of boat needed to get us to the small island and... weee, let's bash some head![/sblock]
