D&D 5E The Rise of Tiamat - End Game - Spoiler

hi all

as I move into the last few chapters ( Thay and Tower ), I am conscious that I need to plan the finale. I know that what is published is very poor in my opinion...

What I have so far is


  • The Allies fight the cult in the lands surrounding the Well of Dragons, this is narrative and doesn't involve the PCs directly
  • Some smaller groups ( 3 bands of adventurers ) are dispatched as separate strike teams

  • Silence the Draakhorn
  • Free the prisoners
  • Stop the Ritual - this is the one the PCs will be tasked with

  • Each of the strike teams enter the Well of dragons via a different entrance - this cuts down on how long I need to have the PCs in the complex
  • Using Dungeon Magazine 175 - Last Breath of the Dragon Queen module change the final encounter to a raised platform rather than a fight in the chapel

So with that in mind what have other people done for their finale's that differ from what is published?

I like this idea, but how do you plan to track the progress of the other two bands of adventurers? Will you roll for it, and if so, how? Or will you just narrate it, and if so, how will you decide how long it takes?

I don't have Dungeon Magazine, so can you summarize the changes apart from the addition of the raised platform? Will Tiamat still be able to fly, for example? What makes the platform better/more exciting, in your opinion?
 

In the Dungeon adventure you end up going into Tiamat's lair, and in the entrance hall there are 5 large dragon mouths one for each colour. Each of these lead to a high level dragon brood mother lair. In my game the PCs have managed to get the Black and Green masks, for each mask they get that is one lair to traverse.

Once the rooms are completed the platform will energise and rise up ( 800 ft ) and you will have 3 large circles

One with the PCs, a middle bit where Tiamat will rise from and a third that will have Severin on.

I like the idea that the idea of a straight fight in the air, relying on some good team tactics from the PCs.

The book one didn't feel epic enough for me
 

as for the other Adventurers exploits, a non Player and myself are to run these as a one off and once that is done I will use the results for the table.

I did something similar for the end of Hoard of the Dragon Queen, when I had a Red wizard fight Rezmir
