Mike Sugarbaker had an idea that I think is cool. Risk Legacy is a game that unfolds as you play it. It changes the game as you go on with things that you only open and include as play continues.

Could something similar be used to introduce the complexity of an RPG?

A D&D that starts simple and has built in milestones of play (not in game, but meta) where you could introduce more complex parts of the game and advanced rules? So that a group or a new play could bootstrap into the game in a more natural way.
