Roles have been around for quite a while, I remember using the following roles when playing baldurs gate 2 or icewind dale: tank (often a fighter), buffer (often a wizard or cleric), trapfinder (only a thief), ranged striker (normally a fighter or ranger), melee strike (often a fighter for the best weapon skills), healer (normally a cleric), spell damage dealer (wizard). That's probably not an exhaustive list but it's the roles I remember the most and still use when I play.
Back then you could cover a couple of the roles with multiclassing and the spellcasters could cover a couple of the roles as well so my clerics would often be focused on healing/buffing and wizards on buffing/spell damage.
