Pikes, halberds etc are different. Spears are primarily designed as a throwing weapon. The mace information was told to me by a tour guide at the Tower of London. They were used a little but the lack of cutting and piercing ability as well as a lack of defensive usage meant the sword was always the most common weapon.

Your tour guide was misinformed. The sword on the battlefield was almost always the weapon of last resort. You pulled out your sword AFTER you'd lost your spear/polearm and whatever other weapons you might have brought with you.

Sword dueling is a bit different. But, as a battlefield weapon? Spears of various forms have dominated the battlefield for centuries.
