D&D 5E The Treasure Map - IC

Insight

The characters move into the Central Tower. This is a three-story part of the library, as opposed to the one-story east and west wings. As the characters enter the Central Tower, they do not see or hear anything out of the ordinary.

[sblock=Kini]Since you are the most familiar with this place, you would know that the Central Tower is where the more popular works are stored. The first level is mostly administrative, while the second and third levels are filled with book stacks. Kini would find is strange that no librarians are present, but that could very well be due to the recent attacks.[/sblock]

Darwin looked around, trying to keep a neutral expression - that was a lot of books. You heard about these things from the merchant, but you never *fully* believed it until you saw it.

"Well, let's start!" Not realizing that there might be different floors for different thing, Darwin looks left and right, hoping to spot a map.

“The Tower has more popular works than the wings,” Kini said, looking around the administrative area of the first floor. “There should be more librarians here…” she mused. “Guess they all ran off?”

Kini went to the front desk and dug out the giant tome of an index. It was nearly as big as she was as she hefted it out onto the counter with a grunt and started to flip through it.

Darwin hopped onto the table to get a better vantage point, trying to see if he could glimpse a map here or there. He turned around when he heard Kini grunt. Why was she looking at the Index? What could a book about fingers possibly tell her in this situation? Wizards...

"Librarians probably left sometime around when flaming balls of pitch started falling," said the dark-clad urchin wryly. "Is there a vault in this place? Somewhere they keep the really important stuff? We can probably save a lot of time and check there first."

Darwin tugged on his beard

"But do they even know this map is particularly valuable?...

...maybe the map was torn apart in fragments on purpose? One piece given to each important member of the crew? " Darwin looked at Shiver inquiringly.

Kini finds a huge set of books that she thinks comprise the library's index. There are five books and each are between 800 and 1,000 pages. The indexes are dusty and unwieldy. She will probably need help to search through these things.

Describing the basics of the central tower --
On the ground floor, there is a large desk. This is where the librarians would sit. Next to the desk are several tables. Kini would tell you that these tables are where scribes would copy manuscripts, log new arrivals in the indexes, and so forth. There are some book stacks surrounding the desk area. There are six sets of book shelves, three on each side of the main desk. Behind the desk (so, opposite the front doors) is a spiral staircase leading up to the next level. Opposite the side where you entered the central tower is a set of double doors leading to the west wing.

Shiver looks at Darwin. The gnome is surprised to see the carvings on the pirate's iron collar seem to writhe and change aspect. Or was it always in that configuration?

Shiver takes on a faraway look.

He says, "Well, in terms of important people on board, I wasn't one of the inner circle. Maybe Bosun. But he's dead of course. Isn't that right, bosun?" He looks up to his right and nods. "Yep".

"Now, maybe we should start elsewhere. Where did you get these fragments? Someone gave you them? Steal them from somewhere? Any clues we can get from there?"

He looks at Strange.

Then he refers to the whip he took from the gnoll. He shudders.

"Alternatively we find ourselves a gnoll. And though I fear it, I will try to use this...thing. It made me tell the truth. Maybe I can make them do the same. But I need some time to figure out how to use it. To...get comfortable with it".

He snatches it up and heads up the spiral staircase to seek solitude.

[sblock=OOC] Is it a short or a long rest for attunement? Either way, he will try to attune to it.[/sblock]

OOC: You need to take a short or long rest to attune to a magic item. A short rest will take 1 hour. You do not know if you can safely take a rest inside the library.

Kini sighed in frustration as she noted the size of the task before her with the big index books. Library research took time, and time isn’t what they had!

“Should we try these, or just search the stacks?” she mused, starting to flip through the tomes. “I’m open to ideas.”
