The Trend from Prestige to Base

My opinion on this whole shebang is that I much prefer base classes to Prestige Classes, and I have a very good reason: As it stands before the influx of base classes, if I wanted a character who was good at both magic and fighting I would have to take several levels of fighter, several of wizard, and then a few levels of Spellsword and/or Eldritch Knight. The end result? I get my concept, but around level 12. Not suitable at all, in my opinion.

With base classes that fill specialized niches, for example Duskblade (to keep with my above example) I can realize my concept from 1st level and build upon that, rather than pick and choose my abilities to ensure that I can get that level of Spellsword at ECL 7 or 8 or whatever just so I can have an effective fighter/mage.

I feel that Prestige Classes should represent entry in elite organizations.. for example, Purple Dragons or Red Wizards (the.. higher cabal of them.. I forget their name). They shouldn't exist as a way to just pump up a character; there should be enough base classes to reasonably fill most niches and character concepts (worse comes to worse, change the flavor around but keep the mechanics for those really weird ones). PrCs should be to add flavor and flesh out specific organizations in a campaign world, in my opinion.

Personally though, I love the idea of having all these new base classes so players can have a concept without waiting 8 levels to get it.
