It was a good article until he went off the deep end with a rant about current events which had pretty much nothing to do with his central thesis. The points about the Spartan's real history were good though.

Especially since the main points of his rant are invalidated by the fact that the Spartans at Thermopylae are, in the end, defeated by an enemy using superior tactics.

You can just as easily make an argument for the Persians being Imperialist America, and the Spartans being any other country in the world that we're currently occupying at the moment... The "We're tougher than the decendent imperialists, so they may defeat us this time with overwhelming odds, but our deaths will raise up in arms the rest of our countrymen to ultimately win the war," is much better propaganda for the other side, than for us.

300 the Unamerican Movie

Good post on this at Kung Fu Monkey, John Roger's blog.

I think the easier analogy is Persia/America vs. Spartans/anyone wanting underdog status in our big wide world. It even has the whole son re-invading what his father started meme.

300 is an entertaining and visually arresting piece of Warnography based on a comic book. I really think any analysis deeper than the surface has more to do with the viewer than the movie.

This guy is a douchebag who should check his more recent history - like the fact that the movie was based nearly directly on a graphic novel written before the Iraq war.
