The Wheel of time has ended...

While I agree with the sentiments (and I would truly be upset to hear GRRM died, finished series or not), I find it a tad ironic for diet and exercise advice to be given on ENWorld. ;)

Give George a black 3x t-shirt and he fits in pretty well with the grognard fatbeard gamers here. That's because he is one.

GRRM is a real fan and a real gamer; in ways that are good - and in the ways that are less than optimal, too.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

I would rather have Martin and all the other fatbeard gamers adopt a healthier lifestyle and have longer life of fun gaming than to ascribe to the idea that pizza crawls and endless amount of Doritos somehow makes you more a gamer.

But anyway, this thread is about Jordan, who died from a form of cancer, if I am not mistaken. I was just expressing my wish for our beloved authors to take care of themselves so they are not taken away from us prematurely.

Here, here! Authors, please take care of yourselves! You can't hear my praise when you're dead!

This is sad. I was looking forward to reading his books when he finally finished. Several of my friends have been pushing them on me... :)

Farewell, -- N

The Wheel weaves as The Wheel wills.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.

Rest assured James Oliver Rigney, Jr. will never be forgotten.

That was beautiful, man.

I started reading the series back in 1991 (or was it '92?) when my younger brother dropped his copy of The Eye of the World on the table in front of me and said, "You've got to read this book!" I did and have been hopelessly hooked ever since. About the time of the 4th book in the series I wrote Mr. Rigney (aka Robert Jordan) my one and only fan letter I've ever written. I was pleasantly surprised to get a return letter from him about a month later and blown away by his down to earth demeanor.

I have to admit that at times I was frustrated at the snail's pace at which each book was being released and the lack of any kind of mention of some of the characters in entire books in the series. But it was the frustration of a person completely caught up in the world and characters that Mr. Rigney had created and feverishly hungering for more. That was the gift he had. Contrary to what some people who consider themselves authorities on literature have said about him, James Oliver Rigney will one day be hailed as one of the greatest fantasy fiction writers since Tolkein (and I dare say, even better than him in a lot of ways, say what you will).

James Oliver Rigney, Jr. you were and still are a literary hero to me. Your books filled the vacuum in many areas of my life in which I desperately needed to get away from reality and the crap I was sloughing through at the time. Your writing inspired me and has influenced my own writing style in many ways. Thank you! God speed! You will be missed.

Wow.

I hadn't been following his health issues recently.

I've also never really gotten into the "Jordan's Pacing Sucks!" side of the critique; I always recommended his books as a good way to show the progression from a low-level D&D campaign (someone sends you out to go and find the foozle) to a high-level one (you have retainers to go find the foozle, and you need to distract the BBEG from sending his minions to get the foozle).

I remember, some years back, that in an interview he'd said that certain members of his fan base had threatened, should he die without completing the series, they would track down and whizz on his grave. He laughed about it, IIRC, saying that it was funny people would have such ... emphasis ... on him and his work in their lives. I wonder if any of them will follow through on their threats (though bringing flowers, instead, I'd imagine)?

Thanks for posting the news, but I wish you hadn't.

When I first heard about the Wheel of Time series, I tried to get into it, but couldn't. Regardless, others regarded him as a good author and perhaps I would have as well if I had invested a little bit more time.

R.I.P. Mr. Jordan.

my condolences to family and friends
