Huh. I have this book (somewhere) and I don't think I read it. I got into the first page or so and just set it down. Probably time to give it another try.

That first book sort of bridges the gap between the old series and the new one. The new series takes place about 40 years after the events of the old series. So anyway... as I was saying... it bridges the gap... and sometimes the book can feel a little slow because of that.

The actual series books... Turning Points and Enemies of Fortune are more like the old series.

Keep in mind that Thieves' World is a shared world anthology... so the series books have lots of characters by the various authors that intermingle in this cutthroat city in the armpit of the world. ;)

I still remember reading the old series when I was a kid. Great stuff...

I love thieves world, favorite gaming setting. The new books have been suprisingly good, but you are right the novel can be slow for people not familar with the old series since it wraps so much of that up without giving much background. It is assume one is at least familar with the old series.

Cool! A Thieves World thread!

I happen to be a sales representative for the publisher of Thieves' World. The first series was great and the new stuff is equally as interesting.

For those who are not familiar with the first series from the 1980's, Tor has collected the first two books into one trade paperback. You can find it here:

I believe Tor will reissue all the books in this manner over time.

Off Topic/For General fantasy readers:

Also, because I absolutely love Steven Erikson, I would suggest his first book which is now in paperback. If you like large, complicated, intricate, epic storytelling, rich in history and depth, you will like Erikson:

Neg,

Are the anthologies being released annually? BN shows a publication date of December 2003 for the first two, then December 2004 for the latest, with nothing showing yet for '05. Can you shed any light?

That sounds about right. It's been torture waiting for each book to come out.

Well....

Sales for the new Thieves' World stories have been modest, honestly. If you will notice the cover treatment of Sanctuary (the first hardcover book) by Lynn Abbey compared to the cover treatment of Enemies of Fortune (the most recent hardcover book) you will notice less "bells and whistles", meaning no gloss cover, foiling, etc on the cover treatment. All that stuff costs and my guess is they are trying to get in line with the success of the series.

As far as the reissues in trade go, I am wondering myself when the next book is coming. We learn about new titles in April, and those would cover the 4th quarter (Sept - Dec 2005). I am hoping to see one there. I think they will be an annual type of release, so it will take quite some time to get them all into print if that is the case. Next time I talk to the publisher or someone in the know, I will ask and post.

I was just asking about this on RPG.net, wondering how the new books are.

Glad to hear that some like them.

On the reprinted front of the duology book, is there anything 'new' in it? Any art or essays about theives world? Anything worth buying for someone who has the original books?
