Third Party D&D Settings

I thought I would be doing a poll, but the replies I got in an earlier thread on this subject soon showed the folly of that idea. There are a lot of third party D&D settings out there. True, they are not officially D&D settings, but why quibble?

So instead I present a question for you. If you could only support one professionally published (unofficial) D&D setting—one for which new material was being produced—which would it be?

So as not to influence the responses I will post mine when there are a number of replies.

There is only one setting that is not an official D&D setting. Fading Suns D20.

I have bought every Fading Suns D20 books published, and will continue to do so. I have dabbled in other settings, but nothing elsehave I bought everything.

Fading Suns isn't a typical D&D-esque setting of traditional perceptions. If we limit to that, I would have said Harn. I have bought all of the Harn D20 books, but it has been forever[/i] since there has been another Harn D20 dual-stat book that I am just assuming that the whole project has been shelved... Would that remove it from consideration if it never again has a D20 product come out? Because if Harn did, I would probably choose that instead.

I wouldn't want to support just one. I like TLG's Erde, JG's Wilderlands, Oathbound, and several others. I like the variety. I ran an FR campaign for 8 years. I have since learned the mistake of sticking to one game setting for too long. Variety is not only the spice of life, but of good gaming.

Without a doubt there can only be one answer for me: The Scarred Lands. I began DM'ing a campaign in the setting about six months ago and haven't looked back at FR / Greyhawk ever since. I love the unique cosmology and the way it is completely integrated into every aspect of the world. The races and organizations are compelling and there are loads of great NPC's. Although some of the magic items, spells and prestige classes push the limits of game balance at times, there are great ideas to mine for a campaign. The only negatives are occassionally disappointing proofreading and limited information from the company concerning new releases and product-line plans.

Thanks for the assist.

I'd say Scarred Lands too. I just have had WAY more fun in it and more interest in it than ...well just about anything 2nd edition had to offer.

(Though it's looking a little bleak with only ONE product in 2004.)

Even so, Scarred Lands until I die!

If I had to choose only one third party campign setting, it would be Arcana Unearthed/Diamond Throne. The design work is tight. Monte always puts out good material. A close second would be the iron kingdoms. It wouldn't be my first choice, because I don't like waiting two years for new material.

If I had a choice personally, I would support Iron Kingdoms...but my wife would kill me so I have to go with her favorite, which is Arcana Unearthed. I gotta have a place to sleep, right? ;)

I can't decide between the Wilderlands (Judges Guild's old world, now published by Necromancer) and Dave Arneson's Blackmoor. After I peruse the latter (which was recently released at Gen Con), I should be able to decide.

Third party D&D campaign settings? My go-to choices are Fantasy Flight Games' Dawnforge and Alderac Entertainment Group's Rokugan.
