You could also use the non-WotC Artficer Prestige Class at http://rumkin.com/reference/dnd/prestige/artificer.html if you just want some[b/] of the flavor without the official rules. It's a totally different approach, though.

Crystalkeep has included the artificer in the PDF on base classes. Should be enough for a first impression.
