This might sound silly... (My players STAY OUT!)

One of the campaigns I DM is coming to an end/pause, we're putting it on the back burner as we will soon begin play on a Forgotten Realms game.

The campaign world is somewhat like Athas (Dark Sun), but with nearly no magic, no psionics, etc. The handful of casters that do exist cast spells per week, not per day (and all are defilers more or less). It's a harsh desert world, where the only soft creatures are people, whom are the only mammals in this world. The technology of those humans is, on average, Stone Age.

Most "loot" in the game world consisted of animal carcasses (if they didn't make dinner out of the PC's) whose bones could be turned into weapons and whose skin could be made into armor (they would also make water skins, clothing, etc. Craft skills were quite valuable). Simply going from point A to point B in 110-150 degree heat in a dangerous desert was an accomplishment. A grand find in one game was 25 lbs. of salt.... Simply put, it's not your father's D&D, and beleive it or not, alot of fun :).

The Endless Desert campaign (as we named it) is coming to a temporary close, but as many know from experience, temporary can sometimes lead to permanent. Anyway, since this has been such a great game for everyone, I'd like to give out some kind of gift to each player; a memento of the experience. This could be as simple as a leather bag with some sand and a handful of rocks inside; or perhaps a flint arrow head... I'm not sure. Has anyone done anything like this? I'd like to see what suggestions or ideas you guys have for it. Thanks! :)

get some plaster of paris. mix 3 parts by volume with 2 parts sand and 2 parts vemiculite. get it pudding thick wiht water and dump it in a cardboard half gallon milk container. wait about 30 minutes to an hour and you can peel the carboard off and you have an easily cravable pillar. for the first few hours it will remain workable with a file or dul knife. smooth and polish with an emery board. coat with clear coat when it has set for a few days.

make them each a personalized idol form the desert world. it will look like it was carved out of sandstone.

you could also just take a tray of slightly damp sand(just moist enough to make a "snowball") and draw a pattern in it, then pour in wet plaster, when it dries you get a relief sculpture that looks like it is made of sand, you can even add in stones :)

hope this helps, email me if oyu need better directions

The stone sculpting sounds funky. BUT...

1) what is vemiculite?

2) Any special sort of sand?

I'm thinking of a cthuloid totem!

vermiculite is a bag of powdered black stuff available at any place that sells plants adn dirt. it is thousands of microscopic dead ocean thingies.

any kind of sand will work, but different kinds of sands will affect the scultpting slightly. coarser sand will make coarser edges, where that superfine colored sand you buy at craft stores makes for super smooth sculptures. for best workability use more than 1 grain size of sand, maybe some coarse stuf with some finer stuff.

when we asked our sculpture teacher what kind of sand to use he said "the cheapest" :p

I like alsih2o's idea alot... but with my tiny apartment and complete lack of a porch or any outdoor work area, coupled with the time constraints it would be difficult (plus my fiancee is a player in this campaign, and it would make it tough to keep this a surprise :)). The one that looks the most likely is a small leather bag filled with sand, some pebbles and an arrowhead. But, please keep the opinions coming :) :)

I don't think that you need to go to great lenghts to provide a momento... most nature stores have pollished quartz crystals... give them each a piece of Adventurine - which some of the native american tribes believed would bring travelers home safely; or some other small token such as a beaded necklace or bracelet made from stone & shell beads.

This is one of those times when the thought is definately what counts... and its a very cool idea.
