I guess I don't get it. Does boner have some other meaning of which I am not aware?

edit: let me rephrase that. I *know* what a boner is in the pre-pubescent boy, haha sense, but assuming these were legitimate comic panels, it must have something other meaning. Joke, or gag, or prank, perhaps?

Webster says, "2 : a humorous and ridiculous blunder"

Interesting. Well, I learned something new today. I can quit for the day. :)

I learned something new yesterday, but now I've forgotten it. Drat!

THe funny thing is, I read this comic in a Batman Anthology in my pre-teens, and I knew the term as "mistake" LONG before I heard it in the "pre-pubescent" sense.

I dunno, It's kinda like someone laughing incessantly at an old gangster movie where the gangsters keep calling the detectives "private Dicks." (For Dick Tracy) :\

And that's all I'll say about it. :)

Yeah, mid-century slang, bonehead mistake. Used a lot with bad plays in sports.
I'd guess the writer of the strip probably was familiar with the other sense of the word, but perhaps the editor wasn't. Post-code comic book writers often took advantage of the "ambiguously gay duo" effect to slip in funny off-color innuendos under a pretense of innocence. The nice thing about puritanical censors is that they often don't know a lot of slang usages and tend to be oblivious to double entendres, so you can slip a lot past them if you're clever about it. If you get caught, well, obviously, you just don't have the kind of dirty mind that picks up on such things.
