"The Hottest Movie Summer of All Time" is really not living up to the hype so far, is it? Well, it's still pretty early in the running.
Not sure what you mean by that exactly. In the five weeks since SpiderMan 3 hit the theaters the US box office has brought in more than $870 million dollars. That averages to $174 million per week. Not sure how that compares with previous years, but last summer only two movies broke the $100 million mark on opening weekend: PotC Dead Man's Chest and X-Men III, and only 11 movies all summer exceeded $100 million in total gross. Five weeks in and you already have three movies with opening weekends and total gross over that mark.

Sorry, wasn't very specific. I wasn't talking about the numbers exactly. I'm aware of those, in a general sense. I was more thinking about the media and how it's hyped 2007 as a huge movie summer (and I tend to agree with them), and they've generally hated the two major blockbusters so far. It's more just a comment on entertainment media and how they get themselves all worked about summer movies and then, when they're finally out, ram the "did not live up to expectations" line down our throats. Personally, I think they set themselves up for it.

In that respect I think you are right, but since it is the "summer of sequels" I think this was almost a given. To be honest, I think I set myself up for it as well. If I really enjoyed a movie and the sequel is coming out, even though I know I shouldn't, I usually have these grand expectations of the sequel. I can think of very few occasions where the sequel lived up to my expectations or the media hype.

Of course I also think there are a lot of critics out there who are determined not to like a movie that is heavily hyped because they don't want to be seen as industry shills.
