Yeah, anyone that was surprised by Dark Knight claiming the top spot this week needs to get their head examined.

I agree it'll be curious to see how long the "ghoul factor" will hold up, but then again Ledger gave one heck of a performance, which may only be fueling folk's desire to see the man's swan song.

I am not so sure that this "ghoul factor" had much to do with the success of TDK.
It probably played a role given all the hype about how awesome Ledger's performance was and his death back in January. There are folks in the place I work that are interested in seeing a Batman movie just to see of Heath's last role was as good as the buzz is saying it is, and these are folks that couldn't care less about comic-book movies.

I'll admit that Dark Knight is such a great movie in addition to the ghoul factor is what's really pushing the numbers. But neither can the ghoul factor be dismissed out of hand. Due to Ledger's popularity upswing in the wake of his Oscar for Brokeback Mountain, he was in the public eye as a "big time actor" and his playing a demented clown drew a lot of interest to a comic book movie, especially in the wake of his passing.

After all, there were people who willingly subjected themselves to the horror that was Street Fighter just to see Raul Julia's final performance as an actor.

Yep - ghoul factor is all about the people that are coming out to see the dead guy.

Early stats have it that 60+% of the Dark Knight's movie goers are women! They are also the ones that thay are repeaters!

I think there would be talkg about how great a job he has done and would be non-superhero-movie-fans coming out to see TDK regardless of the fact that he has died. I think it lessens the perception of the quality of his performance to attribute too much of an influence on his death or some people's facination with death. I think the hype is primarily about his performce quality and only to a lesser extend about it being his last role. I do however think that if you could show an upswing in DVD sales and/or rentals of Roar (the series) and A Knight's Tale then that would largely be ghoul factor.
