I'm sure that most of it is just reprinting of what's in the revised SW, CoC, and d20 Modern books as those tended to be clearer than the D&D stuff. That, and the FAQ is probably the source for most of this. You only need designers for MAJOR rule changes. Most of the stuff (except maybe the classes) sounds like minor things (give harm a save, etc) so I don't think it needs much in the way of designer input. Also, it could be that there were rules around from the design phase that weren't implemented (class variants fit that bill) because they didn't think that people would go for them. If, however, they see a lot of people complaining about the ranger and they see they have a draft version of the ranger that fits these complaints, maybe that's what they do. I also notice that Monte has commented that if he had it back he would like to change the magic item creation system, and this is one of the things that is being revised. Maybe Monte actually worked on that?
I'm sure that some people will have problems with the changed rules (that's human nature) but then they could continue to use the old rules.
Anyway, I don't feel that WotC has screwed me yet (except for Alternity, but that was a fair business decision) so I remain faithful they won't now.
