Thoughts on Bargle

First Post
I just went and looked up all the info on this guy.

Magic User of (from what I can guess), 6th level in the 1983 red box edition. But looking at what he does, I would suspect that he is level 4 in 3e. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

He is getting put in my campaign as an NPC. Thing is no one in my group has ever read the 1983 red basic books, so they will have no idea who this guy is. I was also thinking about dropping in mentions of Aleena and adding the fighter you play in the intro adventures as an NPC too. Thinking about calling him Hawk. I am thinking of throwing it in a town where all those events have happened recently and play into what is going on.

Suggestions?

Aaron.

For some real fun, give Bargle two apprentices name Barjin and Blastum, and an NPC Dwarf bodyguard named Gutboy Barrelhouse... :)

Strictly speaking, Bargle is the henchman of Baron Ludwig von Hendriks of the Black Eagle Barony, and they're both detailed in the Karameikos Gazetteer. I also recall that he gains a tonne of levels and/or winds up dead in Mystara's timeline. I guess it depends if you view your Bargle more as the Basic Set Bargle or as the Mystara Bargle.

Bargle the Infamous

The PWAII has Bargle as a 28th level M-U. (this was for D&D). This was set in 1011 AC

The PWAIII has Bargle as a 17th level Mage (this was for AD&D 2nd edition). This was set in 1012 AC.

The original boxed sets were set in 1000 AC

I'm sure the Hackmaster version of him will make many jokes about his name.

Hello,

Yes, a thread with Bargle's name in the title had to bring in the Old Mystara Hands sooner or later... :D

He does gain a ton of levels, but doesn't wind up dead, no matter how many people in Mystara may wish he were. In the post-Wrath of the Immortals Mystara timeline, his master Ludwig provokes his halfling neighbors once too often, and they show his overlord King Stefan Karameikos the true nature of his rule. Stefan seals the borders on his side of the Black Eagle Barony and gives the halflings carte blanche to deal with Ludwig as they will. As the halfling forces are closing in on his stronghold, Bargle persuades Ludwig to lead his forces in a counterattack, while Bargle stays behind to work magics that will assure its success. Once Ludwig is gone, Bargle teleports away with the entire contents of Ludwig's treasure chamber. The Barony falls, Ludwig is taken, and rumors of Bargle's presence have popped up in odd corners of the Known World ever since.

Below is my homebrew 3e conversion of Bargle, taken from his Poor Wizard's Almanac II stats, the last set of "real" (i. e., OD&D, not neutered for 2e's level-20 limit) stats available for him. I've left him 28th level overall, and I've taken advantage of the 3e multiclassing rules to better fit his character to his history, which states that he was a petty criminal in the streets of Specularum before he killed his first wizard's apprentice and stole the spellbooks that set him on the path of magic.

Bargle the Infamous, Ex-Magist of the Black Eagle Barony (Karameikos).

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten around to converting Aleena yet - I've started with those characters prominent enough to get their stats summarized in the Poor Wizard's Almanacs. And now I'll have to do a lot of revision to bring them all up to 3.5e standard...

Anyway, hope this helps! :)

Ah... Aleena, B&W Elmore spandex chainmail model.

I am changing my sig. I found this quote in the red book and I think it rocks.

"We all take our risks, here in the dungeon." -- Bargle, 1983 Red Box.

I think I am looking at strictly the red box version. Its more transportable. I think it will just be him, skip the Aleena and "Hawk" (it was given as an example of the character's name). I was thinking that he would be a sort of minor asset/ trouble maker. Sometimes he would be up to no good, other times it would be in his interest to help the party. I would never set him up as an adversary though. He is the guy that would sell the party a stolen or cursed item, or provide a map that gets them in all sorts of trouble. But other times he's legit. He's the last guy they always go to when they are looking for somthing.

I think that fits the character that is set up in the example adventure.

Anyways, thanks for the info.

Aaron.
