Thread Capping

I don't think the word is "cap" Add a letter after the c to make the word rather more unpleasant.

Which is basically what some people do to a thread. They make a "contribution" that stinks up the place; usually the conversation goes downhill and off-topic, and nothing good comes out of it.

How is a thread capped? Why would anyone want to cap a thread?

Is there an option as to whether or not cap one?

You're thinking of "Threadcrapping", the practice of posting in a thread just to "crap" on what is being discussed.

Some examples of threadcrapping would be somebody posting an anti-MMORPG rant in a "Who here plays World of Warcraft?" thread or going to a thread created for discussing the previous weekend's NFL games just so you could express your disdain for football and fans of the sport.

I just felt the need to drop in and blatently push my oppinion on how stupid forums are to all of you forumers!

hah All hail paper printed media!

err, yeah sorry. I have actually never heard the term threadcrapping, but generally referred to such a thread as flamebating.

Threadcrapping often happens when someone wants to discuss something interesting in Dragon Magazine.

The threadcrappers jump in to say:

* That issue hasn't arrived in my mailbox yet.
* I let my subscription lapse when D&D switched to 3E.
* I hate the new-fangled art in Dragon.
* I design my own feats, monsters and house rules, thank you very much.
* I'll start reading Dragon when they go back to making it the way it was made by TSR.

And so forth.

that's not threadcapping. that's filling the OP in on the history.

i still haven't gotten my latest subscription of The Strategic Review

Nuh uh.

When someone enters a positive thread and smudges it with a quick, foul sentence unrelated to the topic, that is threadcrapping.
