According to the killers, the parents even participated in the game session for a bit.
Probably the parents were encouraging their son's hobby as a way of meeting new people, unaware that those "friends" were plotting to killing them all and robbing their house.
Like I said, RPGs are being used here as a way to claim temporary insanity and escape a much harsher sentence. In brazilian law, "robbery followed by murder" is a heinous crime (not eligible for bail) and doesn't go to jury, but straight to the judge. If they claim "the game led us to it", it can go to jury and they can make a circus out of it to lighten their jail time.
