Three Killed Over Role-Playing Game (merged)

According to the killers, the parents even participated in the game session for a bit.

Probably the parents were encouraging their son's hobby as a way of meeting new people, unaware that those "friends" were plotting to killing them all and robbing their house.

Like I said, RPGs are being used here as a way to claim temporary insanity and escape a much harsher sentence. In brazilian law, "robbery followed by murder" is a heinous crime (not eligible for bail) and doesn't go to jury, but straight to the judge. If they claim "the game led us to it", it can go to jury and they can make a circus out of it to lighten their jail time.

The article fails to state that the killers drugged the three people killed with sleeping pills, took ATM cards, went to a local ATM to withdraw about US$2000 from the younger victim, and took computers and other stuff.

This hits the nail on the head....rpgs did it...RIIIIIIIGGGHHHT.

The sad thing is three people died, two criminals are trying to use RPGs as a means of lightening their sentences (by claiming temporary instanity) and at least two laws have been proposed in the state of Espirito Santo (where Guarapari is) banning the selling and advertising of RPG-related books and magazines.

The confessed killers claimed that one of them was the Gamemaster, the other played a lawyer and the killed gamer played a cop. I wonder what system they used, since the only books found were AD&D 2e (the black cover ones), Shadowrun and the such.

The article fails to state that the killers drugged the three people killed with sleeping pills, took ATM cards, went to a local ATM to withdraw about US$2000 from the younger victim, and took computers and other stuff.

I was hoping Claudio would jump in with the real story.

For almost a decade, V:tM was the most extensively published (and played) RPG in Brazil (AD&D 2e was absent after a brief stint in 92, and Gurps had few supplements, although it was the first to arrive here). The dress-code of the gamers (gothic or all-black, full of crosses and other symbols), coupled with the fact that RPGers in Brazil tend to fall in the 13-19 range of age, built a very fertile ground for the "RPGs corrupt the kids!" mentality.

Well, no wonder RPGs have such a bad rap if the most popular one is a White Wolf product. /thread crash off

Your English is excellent, BTW.

Yahoo News - Mangling the mangled news since 199x. ;)

We dont know the whole story. Thus, we cannot draw any conclusions.
Yeah, damn that Yahoo News staff which just reprints whatever the AP writes. And damn that AP writer for not sending out continual updates on every criminal case from Brazil.

Clearly, that's what the American version of Yahoo needs -- 24/7 Brazil coverage. From the beach. With a live Webcam. (Actually, that doesn't sound like a bad idea.)

That's it. I am taking up scrapbooking instead.

Really.

Honest.

What, don't you trust me?

Hey, would I kid about something like that?

Well, okay, maybe I'll still play once in a while... :p

The Auld Grump

Hmmm, a scrapbooking lich with 'tude. This might work.

on-topic: I wonder if Host A Murder will get half the mention of D&D in the these news stories. It sounds too much like some guys who knew a gamer decided to rip him off and use this as an excuse.
