Thunder Leap

Sorcerer, Daily, Attack 5

How does the jumping work with this power? Is one jumping over squares? That seems the most logical- otherwise it would be, "Thunder Bunny Hop" Does doing so (jumping over things) cost extra movement for hangtime?

My reading has always been that the jump is more of a descriptor, i.e. the character leaps through the air and lands at the end of the listed distance. Note how the description of this power compares with the ones where a Sorcerer may hover at the end of a move.

Jump is actually a keyword for an action, not fluff - see Athletics, "Jump", for the full rules on it.

I've always read that power as indicating that the Sorcerer makes the Athletics check automagically.

And no, there's no hangtime, and no parabola calculation either.

Ancillary question: the text of the power implies that the sorcerer must jump his full move distance, and my DM ruled as such:

PHB2 said:
You jump a number of squares equal to your speed + your Charisma modifier.

However, is the intent of the power that you can jump UP TO that distance in order to make the secondary attacks?

My own read of the power (and I've taken it for my Sorceror) is that the "jump" portion means one must follow the rules for jumping, in that you have to jump vertically at least 1/4 of the horizontal distance, thereby limiting its utility in low ceilinged environments. Additionally, I would rule that it does allow you to jump up vertically (say between levels) as well as over pits/gaps/enemies.

And please show your DM the "movement effects" box on pg. 219 of PH2 - it makes clear that any power that reads "move x spaces" actually means "move up to x spaces".
