time to read a scroll?

0-hr

To read a scroll with Identify on it - does it take a standard action, or an hour?

My research seems to indicate a standard action unless stated otherwise. The DMG part on scrolls hints that it's like casting the spell but never actually states that it takes as long to read as it would have to cast (and so I'd have to go with 1 standard action).

An hour.

"Activating a magic item is a standard action unless the item description indicates otherwise. However, the casting time of a spell is the time required to activate the same power in an item (such as a scroll, pair of boots, etc), unless the item description specifically states otherwise."

The item description for scrolls does not specifically state otherwise.

The text under "Spell Completion" is not an item description. It is an activation method description.

Since the item description does not state otherwise, the casting time of Identify is the same time required to activate the same power in an item (such as a scroll).

If you want standard action Identify, play a cleric with the Magic Domain and the Create Infusion feat. The item description for Infusions does specifically state otherwise.

Sorry for being dense but it sounds to me like you are saying "that time required to cast a spell from a scroll is equal to the time required to cast a spell from a scroll."

Is there anywhere this is stated a bit more clearly?

The time necessary to cast a spell from a scroll is the same time it would take if you were casting the spell normally.

I'm just unsure of what happens when you read a quickened spell from a scroll :)

Agreeing with Hypersmurf. If the casting time of identify is an hour, then the activation time of a scroll of identify is also one hour.

...the casting time of a spell is the time required to activate the same power in an item...

Free action.

The item description doesn't specifically override the general rule with the "minimum of one standard action" like wands and staffs do.

No, sorry, Quickened any-spell-whose-casting-time-would-be-reduced-to-a-free-action-if-the-quicken-spell-feat-was-applied-to-it.

How do you guys rule taking the scroll and unrolling it before the actual casting begins? Move-equivalent? Always a free action? Free action with the right equipment (scroll sash)?
