D&D 4E Times 4E News Scared You

Okay, while "scared" was probably not the best word to use, I get the OPs original point, so I'll avoid contributing to the general snark. I get the gist.

There have been a few times I've been afraid of the direction D&D was going in since 4e was announced. Without going into too much detail:

1) The announcing of Dark Sun. While I initially met it with joy and shot down the naysayers with the argument of "even if they completley screw it up, it's still going to be cool, because you'll have at least a little bit of Dark Sun material to mine", secretly, I was kind of nervous about it. After all, WOTC had supposedly messed up FR pretty heavily, and while they couldn't take away "my" Dark Sun, they COULD change it enough that I could no longer have conversations with gamers about it without having to clarify terms.

The whole "feywild in athas" thing really threw me for a loop, which started a kind of funny thread where I blew my top off. I still disagree about the feywild in Athas and the presence of Eladrin, but I did kind of go overboard.

In the end, wotc did a pretty good job with Dark Sun. While I do have a few minor quibbles, they are generally pretty easy to fix. A lot of things wotc did with Dark Sun were actually really clever and were things I would never have thought of.

2) Invigorating & Two-weapon fighters. I saw those when they first came out and instantly saw Power Creep. When we played a game with an invigorating fighter and a two-weapon fighter, I got nervous. In fact, when the two-weapon fighter, at around 6th level, did a crit for around 80 points of damage, I got very, very nervous (and actually told the player to make up a new character). The fact that subsequent errata seems to have fixed the problem is cool, I guess, but the whole thing kind of made me nervous about using & buying splat books. Luckily, I got primal power for 15 bucks at a used book store, and realized wotc had begun to make better splats.

3) Keep on the Shadowfell - Yup. The very first 4e product really made me nervous about 4e in general. I bought this a few days after it came out, and while I liked the general rules set, the way the adventure was set up really made me wonder if the game was going to be any good. Especially when I ran the first few encounters and realized how boring it was. Luckily, I ditched it and made my own intro adventures which were a helluva lot better.
