Timestop+Otiluke's Resilient Sphere

Hi, I'm trying to make a overpowered exp.level 20* character solely for the purpose of dueling, either an Artificer(Eberron) or Spellcaster(Unearthed Arcana)

My question is this: Could I form an Otiluke's Resilient Sphere around my opponent during Timestop? SRD for Timestop says:
While the time stop is in effect, other creatures are invulnerable to your attacks and spells; you cannot target such creatures with any attack or spell.

However, I'm not exactly targeting my opponent, just making a sphere around him/her.

If ORS doesn't work, does Forcecage?

Because if it does work, the combo with Cloudkill seems nasty.
*Actual level will prob. be 19 as I make Wondrous Items and Scrolls

I don't play many high level games, so I don't mess with 9th level spells much, but my reading of Time Stop is pretty straight forward: no targeted spells.

ORS spell description has an effect line, not a target line..you simply bring an orb of force into existence and it is not targeted at any individual. In that respect, it's more like a summoning spell than a targeted spell, and the Time Stop spell description specifically allows summons. Opponents get to make a saving throw, but that doesn't make the spell targeted; after all, you make saving throws when you are in the Area of Effect for other spells, and they are specifically allowed in the Time Stop write-up as well.

So I would think that it would qualify as Kosher under the Time Stop rules.

Think I agree with Ranger19k on this one ... ORS's description is of an area-of-effect centered around a particular creature so you're not actually targeting the creature per-se, but rather the space its standing/flying/etc at.

however further on it states "Nothing can pass through the sphere, inside or out, though the subject can breathe normally." .... rendering Cloudkill rather pointless since the sphere's magical field is giving your victim clear breathing space within the poisonous fumes for the duration.

since your victim cant leave the sphere, perhaps a more interesting use would be to cast it followed by one of the wall spells/similar heavy object ATOP the sphere so when normal time resumes, all they can do is idly await the moment the sphere *pops* and the weight crashes down upon them, knowing they wont have a chance to react before becoming squishy goo. ** evil laugh **.

Thanks guys!

jefgorbach->I thought the description just meant the "normal" air in the sphere is inexhausible.

Ie, if I were to cast Otiluke's underwater(or on a aqueous organism levitated in the air), doesn't the creature still drown/suffocate?

That said, I'll trust your judgement and play it safe.

One problem: The max. damage for falling objects is 20d6, which is respectable but a tad low for this type of duel. Help!

Check the Complete Warrior. While the damage you take is capped at 20d6, the damage you can deal with a falling object is not.

I'd say you -could- cast an ORS around someone during a timestop. However at the end of your timestop duration, they will still get a save to not get trapped in the sphere. This could cause problems since you wont know if they failed their save until after your TS ends. I'd say this is probably RAI, but there does not appear to be anything that says the RAW on this.

In no way shape or form does time stop take away other spells saving throws. And you cannot cast spells that directly affect others while time stopped.

Forcecage: Yes
Wall spells that allow saves to interrupt(like wall of ice): See ORS
Cloudkill: Yes, however it wont damage anyone until after the TS ends.

In regards to Resilient Sphere in a Time Stop, I feel I need to say nay. You're attacking the target with a spell, hence the need of a Reflex save. You got the right idea though, with using spells that will force the target to rely on magic to escape somehow.

Oh Time Stop, you magnificent spell you. Capable of ending a fight immediately if done just right. Forcecage, Wail of the Banshee, Prismatic Sphere, Haste, Delayed Fireball...and that's really all that comes to mind in the now. Anything more and I'm sure my brain will hurt. I've only played mid-level magic games till now, and I can only guess what may happen down the road when it comes round.
