Tiny preview for Scarrport: City of Secrets

The damage is 1d10 for pistols, and 2d8 for rifles, but I think the Proficiency should be revised, though, to be ranged martial. The mroe I think about it, the more I want to have higher damage rather than increased attack bonus.

Muskets aren't overly accurate weapons.

I agree, but remember a to hit bonus is more important then damage. I do think that 2d8 is a little high for damage for the rifle. Mainly cause very few weapons get 2 dice of damage, and it can be unbalancing when you talk about powers that have 2,3,4, up to 7 (W) damage. If you don't mind the sugestions, I have a few. Keep the weapons Superior (as it should take a feat to be fully trained in using guns), drop the to hit bonus down to a +2 (that way it won't feel like such a bite on a PC's to hit ratio), keep the pistol damage the same but change the rifle to 1d12 and add something like High Crit or Brutal (Heck if you can add both by the rules, do it) That way it doesn't break damage potential but still gives the guns some kick

Good ideas.

Thanks for the feedback!

Isn't Brutal in Martial Power?

If so, I can't use that Damage code. Nothing from Martial Power is covered in the new system reference document.

Damn, I wasn't sure if it was covered or not, but I think high crit is players guide. I'm sure there is another effect that fits you can add.

ok, d12 rifles with high crit still sound pretty nice. Also going along with your theme of early firearms aren't very accurate, is why you have them be superior weapons. Anyone can use a gun (with no bonus to hit) but only those with real training and skill can get them to be somewhat accurate (as in gaining the bonus to hit from the feat). You could also make them two seperate feats, one for pistols and one for rifles. Someone who is skilled in a rifle might not be quite as good with a pistol and vise versa

These are great suggestions. Thanks, raptor. I was also worried about the 2d8 damage being too high but being able to use a weapon once every two rounds deserves some extra punch. High Crit isn't quite it, as crits will occur less often when only attacking half the time.

Also, consider weapons like the greatclub, the falchion and the maul. All of these weapons have 2dX as their basic weapon damage so that at least has precedent. I'm not sure that all superior weapons NEED to have a +3 proficiency bonus, although I do agree that no weapons have a +1. Raising the bonuses to +3 and +2 is probably the best way to go.

Anyway, your comments have sparked debate and I'm thinking about how firearms will play out.

Yeah I'm glad, though my rules lawyer said that two dice might not be as bad as I though. Though he was more worried about the slow load time, though I understand it. I really want this to be a balanced and usable thing. If you keep it a superior weapon two handed weapon you could most likely make it 2d6 with not that much uproar.

as far as prof bonus goes I think a +1 is very bad...becuse why spend a feat for only +1 to hit...remember that is all profecancy gives you in 4e...so fireing it non proficet is only a -1 for all porpuses...

as for the damage I see no problme with multi dice. I agree brutal would be best (maybe someday when they update the rules for 3pp)

just spit balling here but imagin

Pistol +2 prof 1d10 brutal 2 high crit
Eifle +2 prof 2d6 brutal 1 high crit

I do also see a problme with standard reload times...it makes you take a turn out of combat...witch is not really in the spirit of 4e...baybe move action load..
