To celebrate the re-re-re-release of Episode IV

.....While he may have had the idea of doing 6 films.....

I know I'm being pedantic here, but Lucas' initial conceptualization of the whole "Star Wars" saga was intended as 9 movies, not 6.

These he further grouped these into sets of 1-3, 4-6, and 7-9, with each trilogy being roughly 20-25 years apart from one another.

Though why he chose to make 4-6 BEFORE 1-3 is anybody's guess.

And will he ever make 7-9? Only Lucas knows the answer to that one!

I've heard about the "9 films" story before. However, I've also heard people say that Lucas denied that he ever had such a plan. Then again, I've heard that he denied that the Christmas Special ever happened as well. :)

Anyway, his reps released a statement saying that he isn't doing 9 films now:

As many fans are already aware of, there are going to be just 6 movies. Unfortunately, George was misquoted in the interview about number of movies in the Star Wars series. Currently LucasFilm is in preproduction for Episode 3, the last Star Wars movie."

Were you one of the test audience back then?

I've seen that old "pre-cgi" Jabba footage myself. I forget where, but I think it was on some "making of" special that ran on tv many years ago. It was just some big guy in furs talking to Han. No Boba Fett in the scene either.

There's a screen cap of the scene in the Wikipedia entry for Jabba here about midway down the page. I'm sure it's somewhere online to see, too.

Yep- found a little bit of it (poor quality), on Youtube, here.

He hasn't denied that we was originally planning to make nine (he says it in the THX VHS's) but he has denied that he will actually go through with making them.

Yeah, I've seen the pre-Jabba footage. It was Han talking to a big greasy guy in furs.

Anyway, supposedly he started with Episode 4 because the first 3 movies would have required special effects he couldn't do at the time (like the capital city of the republic, Corsuscant).

Because Episode 4 starts in medias res, and would therefore be more exciting than Episode 1.

Look how right he was.

That's actually not true, though. The finished movie does start like that, but there was a lot of footage shot which takes place before that. Luke & his friends talking, then Luke meeting Biggs (who just came back from the academy), then Biggs telling him he's going to join the rebellion. And Luke notices the fight in space via binoculars, then it cuts to the ISD chasing down Princess Leia's ship.

While that was cut out of the movie, it was included in the radio drama version, which is based on the entire script.

Don't quote me on this, I stumbled across this on a DVD rumor site - apparently there will be a special 30th anniversary boxed set release in 2007, which will "make further changes" to the movies and have deleted scenes. So maybe that will be in it?

They keep it up and we're gonna rebel like the LOTR fans are with the newest umpteenth "revision" of the movies.

George needs to learn when ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and let things be. If he wants to tinker on stuff, he can remove Jar Jar from the prequels.
