D&D 5E To much 5th edition content?

dave2008

Legend
I have bought more D&D books for 5e than any edition (I started back with 1e & BECMI). I've really enjoyed it and I just picked up MOoT. However, I think I am about done. There is already way more content than my group can get through and I just don't know that I want anything more. To clarify, I am not burned out or anything like that. We still have stories to tell and will keep playing 5e for many, many moons. However, I just don't see my buying much more 5e stuff. I have more content than I need. Is anyone else in the same boat?

EDIT: Someone asked for some hard data, so here are some of the player options available. Please note I made this list in novemeber of last year. So it doesn't include Wildemount or Theros. I don't believe it includes anything from AI either. If I get a chance I will update it.

I know how you feel. While I really appreciate 5e's slower release schedule, I would actually prefer it if it was even slower, like maybe one or two books a year like it was at the start. And also, as a DM, I'm feeling like the player-facing content is getting spread too thin, with a subclass here and a race over there. It's hard to keep track of it all, both in terms of letting my players know what's available and also having to remember where they got a particular thing from. I guess that's why AL has its PHB +1 rule.

That said, I'm not yet at the point where I don't want to keep buying what they put out. I've got everything except the Theros book, which I'm still waiting on due to the pandemic delays. That's not to say I've read everything, though.

I've been saying that there's not enough content coming out for 5th edition.

My opinion is that most of the adventures that came out for 5th edition are either really mediocre or updated versions of old classics. It's really been disappointing so far.

As for actual content. Xanathar and Volos were good. But we got a few settings book and that's that. I would really like some additional books with monsters, magic items, variant rules, etc. As much as I like fifth edition, it's lack of depth is starting to show and the game is growing stale, hence my interest in other systems right now.

As for you, if you don't have interest in settings books, you shouldn't feel like you're missing out on anything because actual content wasn't released in a while.

There is a ton of content really. But, when you compare it to all the material in 2E with guides, sourcebooks, modules, etc. there was WAY more.

I go back and forth about 5E in a lot of ways myself. I haven't bought anything in 6 months or more. About the only thing I would buy at this point is ADVANCED 5E (fill in those gaps and expand out the rules for the players who want it and don't want to have to do it ourselves).

I buy stuff that I want and don't buy stuff I don't want. And I find nothing wrong with that approach. If I've gone 18 months without buying a book, that's fine. No big deal. And if something comes out that I do wish to get (like I'm going to pick up MOoT), then I will and be fine with that too.

I'm pretty close to the OP. There is plenty of 5E material for me for years to come. I've only bought what I felt I would use, mostly. Though I did pick up SCAG as part of a bundle deal so it was pretty much free. But I don't use it.

I only buy the adventures I'm going to run. I don't need more ideas after 40+ years.

I don't want more player options, more races, more crunch. I don't want to see a repeat of previous editions and/or power creep.

At this point there's so many of those isolated elements that a compendium reprint would be cool (maybe a softcover?)... Especially if it means another place to get the melee cantrips outside the SCAG.
