Today I learned +

Something I was aware of at a certain level for some time, but never really understood the nature & speed of was a radical change in (Western) men’s fashion that saw us going from proud peacocks to muted mud hens.

A few months ago, I learned this phenomenon happened fairly abruptly, and it has a name: The Great Male Renunciation.

I’ve always followed my own style muses, but for purely personal purposes. Since I’ve learned about this phenomenon, I’ve been consciously making bolder style choices…while still remaining mostly mainstream overall. IOW, while my clothing is still nominally in keeping with the usual jeans/kakhis/slacks or t-shirts/polos/button-down forms, my color & pattern selections are becoming bolder than ever before.*

Right now, I’m pursuing socks & shoes. In the past few days, I’ve bought several pairs of Oxfords/Derbys from various brands, in teal, pink, purple and white.

* with a few exceptions. I haven’t bought a new banded collar shirt in more than a decade.

This thread is about stuff we learned today. This thread is not a stealth "pineapple" thread -- it is legitimately for fun/cool/interesting/weird facts you learned suddenly and want to share.
Today I would appreciate it if I could learn what a pineapple thread was.

I didn't know anyone had given a name to it, but I was vaguely aware that men's fashioned changed rather radically from more ostentatious attire into the staid, almost spartan attire we're accustomed to.

I don't believe in the no-win scenario

Like the Steve Jobs thing with black turtle necks. Fill your closet with the same thing so you dont spend any brain power on deciding what to wear. I had a co-worker who did this (not turtle necks but black shirts and khakis.)

Though I did go with darker colours, I do own a black brocade tailcoat, dark red Jacquard vest, white lace cuff shirt with jabot, and black flap front trousers. With my smallsword I could have fit right in with the cast of "The Duellists."

I knew a guy who did something similar (short-term) when studying for the bar: he shaved his head, and stored all of his clothes that weren’t white t-shirts or blue jeans.

I wasn’t his buddy, so I never told him what kind of impression he was making with minorities in the same bar review course…

That’s where I was at one point!

I had noticed the difference in men’s gas over the centuries, as mentioned. But I hadn’t thought about it. Why and when it had happened.

Then a few years ago, someone called me a dandy. While I knew what the word meant, I felt compelled to look up a more formalized context. I uncovered a bunch of stuff about cultural and political dandyism; what it was, what it wasn’t.

But it wasn’t until a few months ago that I stumbled upon the Great Male Renunciation as a term.

On the radio this morning I hears that scientists discovered a new body part. It is a small gland in the back of your upper throat that does something with the back of your nasal cavity. I found it scary that modern medicine is discovering new body parts with all the specialists and things like MRIs and all along somebody is pointing to something and asking what is this, but everyone else is like, don't know maybe dirt on the film. The other scary part is it was discovered as part of a colon study.
